Bones found on island might be Amelia Earhart's
Source: yahoo/AP

By SEAN MURPHY, Associated Press Sean Murphy, Associated Press – Sat Dec 18, 12:47 am ET

NORMAN, Okla. – The three bone fragments turned up on a deserted South Pacific island that lay along the course Amelia Earhart was following when she vanished. Nearby were several tantalizing artifacts: some old makeup, some glass bottles and shells that had been cut open.

Now scientists at the University of Oklahoma hope to extract DNA from the tiny bone chips in tests that could prove Earhart died as a castaway after failing in her 1937 quest to become the first woman to fly around the world.

"There's no guarantee," said Ric Gillespie, director of the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, a group of aviation enthusiasts in Delaware that found the pieces of bone this year while on an expedition to Nikumaroro Island, about 1,800 miles south of Hawaii.

i saw this story yesterday, tell you what, why don't these fine folks even figure out whether or not the bones are human first and then get back to me?

when did science become abt the hustle and getting a spot on the history channel instead of, you know, SCIENCE???

5. I thought it interesting also.
Amelia is not a common name and my Mom's name was Amelia. Besides the whole woman aviatrix thing, I love the name :)

My Mom talked about her a lot and how fearless the 'other' Amelia was to take on such an adventure.

9. The whole "women aviatrix" thing?

Unlike the male aviatrices of the 33rd Flying Tranny Battalion?

7. While I agree with you (being a "scientist" essentially myself)
But, I also have to admit to being one of those that "eats up" every story about Amelia Earhart and the various theories on what happened to her. She captivated me as a young child and one of my prized gifts from my late Mom was a book on her disappearance--which, ironically was one of those focusing on Gardner Island.

So, I guess I can understand. Besides, they are undoubtedly dependent upon getting some publicity to keep funding their search efforts.

11. The guy is crazy
This island was inhabited shortly after Amelia dissapeared, by up to 100 people including several British colonists(at least one of whom was buried there), so finding food eaten not like a Pacific islanders and western finds from the 1930's, is what you would actually expect to find on this island. Also there was a British shipwreck here in 1929, where there were several casualties and some were missing and pressumed dead, so not all bodies were recovered, and the rest of the people camped out for several days before rescue. Finally the US coast guard used the island during WWII.

17. I think everyone has their own "dead pet ponies" to beat up.

It is a political bulletin board and I think this story just jarred some as being too "fluffy" or "mundane".

I will admit to beating my own dead horses, but sometimes it is just nice to see an interesting story. And it fit the criteria for LBN.

These older mysteries fascinate me. I feel there is still much to learn about what really happened. There is much to be added to the already known facts, if it comes from DNA or modern forensic digs, or linking back to stacks of old records.
