Metro rolls out ‘See Something, Say Something’ billboards
Source: Las Vegas Sun

With the holidays fast approaching — and scores of expected tourists flooding Las Vegas for events — Metro Police want the public's help reporting suspicious activity.

With that sentiment in mind, police announced today the presence of new ads as part of the "See Something Say Something" national campaign on eight or nine digital billboards across the Las Vegas Valley.

As the name suggests, the campaign's goal is to garner the public's help reporting suspicious activity to help thwart terrorist activities or other crimes.

1. Orwell was such an optimist!
Well I just saw something so I thought I would say something. So there.

It is hard to ignore the signs that a new Stasi has officially been created here.

Fink well. Fink often ... especially on those people you don't like.

2. Yawn. Other areas have had these for years
CalTrain and BART both have similar signs. London Transport has had them since the IRA bombings in the 80s. IMHO it's actually a good idea to encourage people to report odd behavior on or in likely targets - remember the failed bomb in Times Square a few months ago? Can it be abused? Of course - anything can. Does it do any good in the long run? Dunno, but encouraging people to be aware of their surroundings doesn't sound like a wholly bad idea to me.

5. Lemme tell ya how BART responds to a "something".
Some guy shoved a backpack under the seat on a BART car then left the car at the very last minute as the doors were closing.
I made my way up to the head of the train and told the operator about it.

She said she would go back and look at at the end of the run. Which was 12 stops down the line.

I got off at the next stop and called Mr. D to come get me.

End of my BART riding.

7. yeah if people had a clue what was "odd"
like "safety" at work. We get red flags thrown at us all the time cause a drywaller or someone sees something "not safe" to them. Usually turns out that for us ironworkers, it is an industry standard.

12. I saw something...
On the Fox Business channel they were calling for the illegal murder of Julius Assange. That's a terrorist threat if I ever heard one.

We have automated announcements that play over the PA system that remind you "bags and large containers are subject to random search by the police." Over, and over.

17. I was more worried about bed bugs than terra-ists when I was there last spring
the large billboard near our hotel in Times Square screaming "BED BUGS ARE IN NEW YORK!" with the picture of one of the critters struck true fear in my heart (not really).

16. I was checking a directory at the Mall of America
and it was set up to play a "report suspicious activity" announcement over and over again. It struck me that the down side of keeping us all in a constant state of fear might be that it results in people staying away from MOA and spending their money elsewhere.
