Dutch ministry spokeswoman says vessel will bring supplies to French and be on standby to help in any evacuation of EU citizens

Friday December 24 2010 | 13.52 GMT

The Netherlands today said it had sent a naval ship to the Ivory Coast which could evacuate Dutch and other European citizens if the post-election violence in the West African nation worsens.

The Dutch defence ministry said the French government had requested assistance and it had agreed to dispatch the ship, called the Amsterdam. While the Dutch foreign ministry said the ship's mission was connected to the situation in Ivory Coast, the French defence ministry denied any such link.

Marloes Visser, a Dutch ministry spokeswoman, said the ship would be on standby to help in any evacuation, but stressed that its main task was to bring food and fuel supplies to the French.

"At the request of the French we will put these supplies on board and bring them to the French ships," Visser said. "We can support the evacuation of EU citizens.

1. Misleading headline. It's a supply ship.
Look. Guns?

2. They're probably using "navy ship" and "warship" interchangeably
Which is admittedly sort of annoying, kind of like calling any military ground vehicle a tank.

3. Bingo...

... I just looked up the HNLMS Amsterdam (A836) <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HNLMS_Amsterdam_%28A836%29> and ran back here to post that same message. To say that the article was "somewhat vague", concerning what type of ship the Amsterdam is would be an understatement.

I thought it peculiar for a "war ship" to be at a hot spot of this type all by itself. But kudos to the Netherlands for sending this naval vessel to provide assistance. Same for France for asking for help on this.

6. Neanderthals

I swear, a fast glance at the topic caught my attention as my weary eyes read "Neanderthals sends warship to Ivory Coast (will bring supplies to French & on standby for evacuation)" had a good chuckle.
