US rejected Polish call for help in alleged CIA prison probe

Poland's call for help in a probe of claims it hosted a US "black site", where suspected Al-Qaeda members were allegedly tortured, was rejected by the US Department of Justice(DoJ), an official document showed Tuesday.

The US justice department turned down the request in October 2009, the Polish prosecutor's office said in a letter to Poland's branch of the Helsinki Foundation, an international human rights group which is monitoring the probe.

"US authorities said that they considered the matter closed," the prosecutor's office said in a letter dated December 15, released by the Helsinki Foundation on Tuesday.

Polish prosecutors launched an investigation in August 2008 into allegations that Poland had allowed the CIA -- the US intelligence service -- to operate a lock-up on its soil.

Poland has a long and brutal history with Russia, most recently with the USSR and the occupation of their country as a buffer state of the Iron Curtain. I can understand.
