WAYNE, Mich. (December 29, 2010)--A massive explosion Wednesday at a furniture store in southeast Michigan collapsed the building and left at least three people trapped.

Wayne City Manager John Zech told WWJ-AM that fire crews were attempting to extricate the trapped victims from the William C. Franks home furniture store in Wayne, about 15 miles west-southwest of Detroit.

He said at least one person has been pulled from the collapsed building.

The building's roof caved in completely, leaving rubble strewn in the street.

The explosion happened about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

This is a bad December to be a building. Fire in Chicago; fire in New Orleans; now this.

1. Reminds me of that scene in;
'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' where they are trapped in the hardware store and they set off fireworks.

Not saying this is equivalent but life imitates art?

Wayne — Recovery workers this evening pulled a second victim from the rubble of a furniture store that was destroyed by a tremendous explosion. It was not immediately clear what the person's condition was.

Rescuers found the victim about 7:15 p.m., more than 10 hours after the blast leveled the William C. Franks Furniture store at 2945 S. Wayne Road near Glenwood. Earlier in the day, rescuers pulled from the rubble store owner Paul Franks, who is listed in critical condition at the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center in Ann Arbor.

After finding Franks, rescuers searched for two other employees believed to be trapped in the wreckage — a secretary and salesman. Searchers lit up the area and continue searching into the night.
