Kansas Bioscience Authority seeking top researchers
Source: Kansas City Star

In the coming months, look for the Kansas Bioscience Authority to spend millions of dollars to bring some of the top foreign animal disease researchers to K-State.

The new scholars will build upon K-State's $12 million Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and looks at how to protect the country's food supply from agroterrorism and animal diseases.

The work at K-State will ease the transition when the aging Plum Island facility in New York relocates to Manhattan, Kan. The 500,000-square-foot NBAF will study some of the world's most dangerous animal diseases.

1. so
12 million will support 5 or 6 people. This money will pay the PI's salary, staff, all equipment costs, etc. What's the big deal? The east coast universities spend this every year to recruit new people.

6. Take note
The money will be used to bring in "foreign" researchers.

Also, not everyone likes the idea of the Plum Island facility being re-located to Kansas.

3. Great school
Too bad they didn't fund research with more than 12 million. I suspect agro terrorism got thrown in to get votes. Fear sells.

5. I am not so sure how I feel about Plum Island not being on an island anymore.......
I know, what with the price of real estate, and the access issues, but still......you WANT some of these diseases safely esconced on an island, lol.

But overall this is a good thing for this facility to be centrally located in the US rather than way over on one coast, just so some places aren't quite so far. Animal diseases have a huge impact on our livestock around the world, and many of them can spread to humans. AFAIAC we can't spend too much money on research and development in this area.
