Wikipedia Raises $16M to Remain Ad-Free
Source: CBS News

A couple of weeks shy of its 10-year anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation said it has raised $16 million in donations from more than half a million people around the world to sustain the Wikipedia website.

The foundation, which is the non-profit parent of Wikipedia, said that more than 500,000 donated in 2010, compared to the 230,000 people who contributed money in 2009.

The average donation was $22.

2. wikipedia: Not the sum total of human knowledge.
Perhaps the abstract, or at least the table of contents, however.

I wonder what wikipedia will look like in 50 years?

4. Had to
It's too useful for my students, plus I find it helpful as well, so I donated.

I don't let the students use it for research papers but I do tell them it's a good starting point. Students love the Wikipedia.

So if you know a student, consider donating $5 on their behalf.

7. Good. Wiki is a very useful starting point and memory refresher, despite some slanting and errors.

8. $16 million?
That is a lot of money. What is it used for? Are servers that expensive?

9. $22 average?
If you have 500,000 people donating an average of $22 you only come up with 11 million dollars, where did the extra $5 million come from.
