U.S. Manufacturing Expands at Fastest Pace in 7 Months

By Shobhana Chandra - Jan 3, 2011

Jan. 3 (Bloomberg)

Manufacturing in the U.S. expanded in December at the fastest pace in
seven months as factories received more orders, reinforcing signs the
expansion gained momentum at the end of 2010.

The Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing index climbed to
57 from 56.6 in November, the Tempe, Arizona-based group said today. A
reading greater than 50 points to expansion, and the figure matched
the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

10. I would like to read a few more specifics on what manufacturing
Edited on Mon Jan-03-11 12:39 PM by JDPriestly
that is what specific kinds of manufacturing is increasing.

Manufacturing of what? More weapons? Or are we actually manufacturing things that ordinary families need like clothing, household equipment?

What are we manufacturing? Are they talking about manufacturing consumer goods? The article says that consumer demand is rising, but I would like more details.

And if you don't want more details, then I'd be interested in knowing why this article is encouraging to you.

And here we go:

Of the 18 manufacturing industries, 11 are reporting growth in December, in the following order: Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Primary Metals; Fabricated Metal Products; Machinery; Computer & Electronic Products; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Textile Mills; Plastics & Rubber Products; Transportation Equipment; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; and Chemical Products. The four industries reporting contraction in December are: Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Paper Products; Printing & Related Support Activities; and Miscellaneous Manufacturing.

WHAT RESPONDENTS ARE SAYING ...

"Company outlook looks positive into 2011. Solid revenue growth across the globe driven by strong volume in Q3 and Q4 2010." (Chemical Products)
"We continue to see strong demand for our product in Europe and Asia." (Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components)
"The end of the year is surprisingly busy." (Computer & Electronic Products)
"Business remains slow, while vendors clamor for increases that should have no foundation in economics." (Nonmetallic Mineral Products)
"Strong pressure still exists on raw material prices in almost every area. It is unclear as to whether they can get them." (Plastics & Rubber Products)

Unfortunately, the quotes are not attributed to any specific companies.

I'd like to know what specific companies in the US are increasing production?

Have you heard of any?

15. So you think the ISM makes it up then?
Edited on Mon Jan-03-11 02:58 PM by dmallind
Do I know of specific companies in the US increasing production? Many, including my employer. We fall into the fabricated metal products category FWIW - mostly for heavy equipment manufacturers, alost all in the US. Since they are buying more components from us, the only reasonable conclusions are limited to a)they are also increasing production or b)they are increasing inventory they expect to need in a reasonable time frame.

The whole point of surveys is to get aggregate data, not individual anecdotes.

16. My employer is increasing production and profits are way up
We did not go "into the red" in this recession, we just had a period of scant profits.
