TUCSON - Deputy City Manager Richard Miranda tells News 4 that Rep. Giffords is currently in surgery, and doctors say she is expected to pull through.

MSNBC: 1:05 pm pst - she is still alive and fighting for her life
reported she is in intensive care

1 patient dead is a child 9 years old

Late Update: As first we listed these new developments as 'conflicting reports' about Giffords' condition. But we are now hearing clearly and unambiguously from the hospital that Giffords is alive and in surgery. We also have reports that the hospital has specifically asked the national media to retract reports of Giffords' death.

Some parts of the brain can take a lot of damage and still survive.

if the round was deflected by the cranium, which does happen, she could have no long-term brain damage at all; otherwise, it depends on how much injury occured, and where. I'm sure the doctors are more focused on getting her stabilized than informing the media right now, as they should be. But we humans are actually pretty tough, physically.

Thank goodness she is alive. And thank goodness the shooter was caught at the scene; I want to know what that asshole's motivations were. Giffords was liked by pretty much everybody.

I see a 9-year-old little girl is among the fatalities. Damn.

I hope and pray that she is able to recover, if not fully, at least enough that she will live a long time with a good quality of life. What a horrible day, and let's not forget those who were less fortunate.

They have people on site and there was a brief press conference from the UMC medical center with NO NEWS ABOUT HER CONDITION!!!

The doc is speaking now... (2pm MST)

10 patients. 1 died. 5 critical. 5 in surgery. Rest stable...

Giffords is in critical condition. Doctor is optimistic about recovery. She's following commands. Through the head...

She was shot in the head... Through her brain... Her surgery has been completed...

(by the way, UMC has one of the best trauma centers in the country)
