Westboro Baptist Church, the Topeka church known for its inflammatory anti-gay protests, plans to picket the funerals of the six people gunned down in Arizona on Saturday.

In a flier posted on its web site, the controversial church writes, "THANK GOD FOR THE SHOOTER -- 6 DEAD!"

The flier claims that the shooting of both a House member and a federal judge is god's punishment for judicial and Congressional action against the WBC. "God sent the shooter to shoot you! And He's sitting in Heaven laughing at you!" the announcement reads.

O I can't post my fantasies about their church, it has to do with churches in Mississippi burning in the 50's and 60's, and some children dying.

Perhaps that best way to deal with these folks is to drive them to Alaska and leave them there. Lots of funerals in Alaska they can protest at, I'm sure. But no one will have a TV camera near them.

At least some of this is coming from their conviction that they have it on God's authority. Crusaders for their church and deity, a motivating illusion with emotional reward. They believe things are wrong because they are sin(God said so), not from their effects on society and other individuals. This assuming process of conviction regarding what is good/bad helps them come to these conclusions, bypassing their ability to reason.

Westboro Baptist Church, the church of hate that pickets funerals to highlight its vile attacks, will picket the funeral of the little girl and five others who were killed in Saturday's shooting rampage.


Fred Phelps, in an offensive press release you may not want to read in full, announced Sunday he will bring his tiny band of followers, fresh from last month's Elizabeth Edwards funeral, to this wounded city because, "That's how God the avenger rolls," he says.


Phelps's video is headlined "God sent the shooter." (He recycled the sign idea from when Westboro picketed the funeral of assassinated physician George Tiller.) Watch if you can stand it as Phelps blasts these victims as "sinners" and intones that we are all in God's cross-hairs.

But better use of time might be to rally the people of Tucson and all who can join them to smother this grenade by throwing a blockade around those pickets, one well stocked with genuine believers in those religions that teach God loves, and wants the best for, humanity.

I know it's reflexively difficult to -not- react to this kind of opportunistic intolerance, but the Westboro Baptist Church is the equivalent of a lonely street preacher haranguing people with a "The World is Ending" sign in his hand. The smart thing to do isn't to engage him in a religious debate; the smart thing is ignore him completely and keep walking by. WBC is a handful of family members who crave publicity or (ideally) a physical altercation. The best was to confound their plans is to not pay attention.
