DETROIT (CNNMoney) -- The plug-in Chevrolet Volt was named North American Car of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday.

The Ford Explorer was voted Truck of the Year in the awards handed out during the media preview days at the auto show.

The North American car and truck of the year awards are voted on by a jury of up to 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The Volt has previously won several awards in the United States, including Motor Trend Car of the Year.

5. Solar panels are too expensive
Solar power costs 8 times the cost of electricity generated with natural gas. If California were to build solar panels to power its vehicle fleet, it would go bankrupt. It is nearly bankrupt now anyway.

10. So natural gas costs less than sunshine? Wow.
Come to west Texas - it shines all the time with no maintenance or upkeep at all.

Wind blows here, too.

6. The bad news is that they're running about
$40,000 retail. Not many people in this economy can afford a new car, much less one that costs as much as my first house.

9. Why don't you buy one?
I don't see a reason to buy a battery powered vehicle. They're too expensive. I'd rather buy a diesel powered vehicle with a 5 speed transmission. Or a hybrid.

Those who advocate electric vehicles don't seem to pay much attention to the economics. And these battery powered cars really suck when it comes to cost/benefit.
