E-mail to lawmakers investigated (“we will shed blood again”)

LINCOLN — The State Patrol was asked Monday to investigate an e-mail sent to a group of state senators by a man who supports getting tougher on illegal immigrants.

The e-mail states that “we will shed blood again” to accomplish such a goal.

It was sent Sunday night to members of the State Legislature’s Judiciary Committee, which will hold a hearing this session on an Arizona-style immigration law proposed by Fremont Sen. Charlie Janssen.

The e-mail appeared to be sent from a Fremont resident who has been a leading supporter of tougher immigration laws and of an ordinance approved by Fremont voters last summer. The e-mail urges the senators to advance Janssen’s bill to debate by the full Legislature.

Here it is:

The (at this point) attempted assassination of an Arizona congresswoman is shocking. It clearly the act of a madman who lived in a delusional world, filled with paranoid fantasies and admiration for both the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf. While it's clear that any "politics" that the murderer has have little to do with the program of either major party, it is by now understood that he was -- if some insist on applying labels -- a left-winger who hated George Bush.

Crazy people doing crazy things is an unfortunate fact of life. We of course recoil at such occurrences, but at base we understand that they are random acts perpetrated by people have completely lost touch with reality.

What I find particularly disturbing about this episode is something else entirely: the cynical exploitation of this tragedy by intelligent, rational people who are using it to paint their political opponents as accomplices to murder.

This is a blood libel of the worst sort, and it is particularly ironic that it comes from partisans of a President whose political career was launched in the living room of an unrepentant domestic terrorist responsible for a wave of bombings which took a number of lives, and who had as one of his best friends in Chicago a former spokesman for an international terrorist group. Let's not forget, too, that the President's recently departed chief of staff, a foul-mouthed and abusive thug, is notorious for an incident in which he screamed the names of political opponents and then yelled "DEAD! DEAD!" while stabbing a table with a knife.

It's doubtful that the murderer, being clearly insane, can be considered in any way to be morally culpable for his outrageous behavior. The same, unfortunately, can not be said for the human garbage who are exploiting this horrible event for their own partisan purposes.
