Report: Women at War Suffering More Mental Health Conditions Than Men
Source: wtvr

RICHMOND —
A new study says female military members returning from Afghanistan and Iraq are more likely to suffer from mental health conditions than their male counterparts.

The Inspector General’s report was released Monday by the Veterans’ Administration’s Office and Senator Mark Warner.

Sen. Warner spoke about the report that reviewed the continued challenges female veterans face in seeking treatment for combat-related stress at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond.

“It became evident to me that this challenge was growing exponentially—in this conflict, perhaps higher than any other in the past—and that there was a particular concern in the changing nature in the conflict particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan, in terms of our women veterans,” said Sen. Warner.

The report found that female veterans continue to be denied services and treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at a higher rate than men because women, by definition, do no serve in combat roles.

1. This explains why the military wants to rethink the use of women
in combat.

2. I think the military likes to use
women and then throw them away....similar to how they treat males in the military. Except the women soldiers have to fear being raped by their fellow male soldiers. I read that 25% of female soldiers encounter unwanted sexual advances.

You know, if people quit enlisting, there wouldn't be any more wars. But I guess that's why we have poverty....the military offers a way out of it. Damn shame.

'the use of women'.....sounds so cold and robotic. Use 'em up and spit them out.

6. I missed that one....
So sad our world has ended up like this....violence is honored. Peace is for cowards.

I'm kind of hoping that the Mayans/Hopis are right about 2012....a new beginning of cooperation and competition is dead.

11. Encouraging joblessness and poor education to get people to enlist in the
military is a very important part of the repuke agenda.

13. And no abortions for the
poor. They want cannon fodder. Great little scam they've come up with. Even got the BGLT community to buy in. Tell someone they can't do something and they'll go out of their way to do it. Just my opinion. Lady Gaga, too.

It used to be that Rock Stars worked for Peace....

I'm old and ready to move on to another planet somewhere far from here....a unisex planet. I wonder how that would be????

9. Maybe the military should do more to support the mental health of their soldiers in general.
It would not hurt if they were better at schooling their male soldiers on how to treat the women soldiers with respect.

I would be VERY interested to know if this is also true in such armies as the Israeli army, where men and women serve side by side.

3. More likely that women are more willing to
report suffering - not that they are 'more likely to suffer'.

But it's a good excuse to remove women from roles in combat theatre, which is what a lot of the military wants to do, anyway.

5. Note that the report cites denial of mental health services to women
and not just that they "have more problems". Personally, I think it's damn healthy to have a problem with killing and maiming, but if women are going to be encouraged to be in that situation then there ought to be help for the damage that it does to them, not because they are innately more fragile but because it's the right thing to do for everyone.

17. It's sad that war has become an employment opportunity
Men and women go to war like they go to work for a 9-5 job.

Thank you Obama continue making this possible!
