U.S. Chamber of Commerce backs health repeal

By CHRIS FRATES | 1/11/11 1:20 PM EST

U.S Chamber of Commerce president Tom Donohue said Tuesday that the powerful business lobby supports the House Republican legislation to repeal President Obama’s health care reform law.

“Last year, while strongly advocating health care reform, the Chamber was a leader in the fight against this particular bill — and thus we support legislation in the House to repeal it,” Donohue said during a speech on the state of American business. “We see the upcoming House vote as an opportunity for everyone to take a fresh look at health care reform, and to replace unworkable approaches with more effective measures that will lower costs, expand access, and improve quality.”

Donohue pointed to the more than 200 waivers to the law that the administration has granted calling it a “revealing acknowlegment that the law is not totally workable” — a departure from the prepared text distributed to reporters that called the law “unworkable.”

The Chamber’s chief lobbyist, Bruce Josten, told reporters after the speech that he expects the House to pass repeal, but expects the Senate and Obama to block the effort. Indeed, the president has threatened to veto the measure.

4. Local chambers are not the same as the national COC. Several Local Chambers
disavowed the national COC for their 2010 Lie Ads.

That's no surprise. But not all chambers are in Bachmann's district.

18. Has the national Chamber of Commerce always been this conservative and politically active?
I never thought of them as an activist wing of the Republican party until earlier this year. I'm sure the money part has much to do with Citizens United, but money aside, I can't remember them being so vocal in the past.

3. of course the USCC wants it repealed
it should be kept in mind that the GOP majority leader is pushing this at the same time he is pushing for Israel to be added to the US domestic defense budget

6. As the article notes, the repeal couldn't pass both houses...
...and would face a veto even if it did.

8. Chamber of Commerce plan:
If you get sick, fly to a foreign medical facility and get treatment. After all, they are members of the Chamber not like those American government-run and government-regulated hospitals. :sarcasm:

9. So, how much Chamber money was sent to various astroturf groups last March
to "target" the democratic representatives who voted for healthcare reform? Hmmm? How much Chamber money paid for the threats of violence? Hmmm? How much Chamber money has gone to the Sarahpac gun sites ad? Hmm???? Shall we look a little deeper?
