Serbia wins EU backing for WTO accession

Serbia has won the European Union's backing for its bid to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO) with the two sides signing a bilateral agreement, officials said on Tuesday.

Countries lining up to join the WTO have to secure the agreement of existing members, before having their accession endorsed by the Geneva-based organization.

'Today's signature is a milestone in Serbia's WTO accession process and an important step towards fostering our economic relations,' EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said after meeting Serbia's deputy premier Mladjan Dinkic.

The EU-Serbia agreement contains provisions on tariffs for trade in goods and the reciprocal opening of services markets, the European Commission said in a statement.
