Brisbane in shock as fresh rains feared
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Flood water in Australia's third-biggest city peaked below feared catastrophic levels on Thursday but Brisbane and other devastated regions faced years of rebuilding, while fresh flood threats loom with a cyclone forecast off the coast.

Large parts of the capital of Queensland state resembled a muddy lake, with an entire waterfront cafe among the debris washing down the Brisbane River, a torrent that has flooded 12,000 homes in the city of 2 million and left 118,000 buildings without power.

With 35 suburbs flooded, many parts of Brisbane looked more like Venice as residents used boats to move about flooded streets, where traffic signs peeped above the stagnant water.

The floodwaters destroyed or damaged many parts of the city's infrastructure. One group of residents was lucky not to disappear into gushing waters when the street they were walking along collapsed.

6. Viewers seek relief from Queensland floods in Facebook drinking game
Edited on Thu Jan-13-11 07:45 AM by Violet_Crumble
MORE than 19,000 Facebook users have become fans of a TV drinking game created in the wake of the Queensland flood disaster.

The Queensland Flood Channel 9 News Drinking Game, which creators say was designed to "make light of a bad situation" was set up by an anonymous Queenslander less than 48 hours ago during Nine’s extended coverage on Tuesday night.

The game tells viewers to "take one drink" at various cues in the coverage including when a news reporter delivers their story standing in water, makes reference to the 1974 floods, or says certain words including "inundated," "unprecedented, "evacuation" and "rolling coverage".

Two, three, four and five drinks are allocated to other televised references like footage of people sitting on their roof, the SES helicopter or Suncorp Stadium, or when the phrase “Queensland’s Darkest Hour" is used.

For anyone playing, here's a reference to the 1974 floods:
