Gun Battles Erupt In Tunisia
Edited on Sun Jan-16-11 03:03 PM by Turborama
Source: Al Jazeera English

Tunisian authorities are struggling to restore order and stop gun battles while politicians are seeking to cobble together a coalition government, in the wake of the toppling of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's government.

A gun battle erupted on Sunday night around the presidential palace in Carthage on the Mediterranean shore, another near the headquarters of the main opposition party in the capital, Tunis.

Two residents said that presidential guards loyal to Ben Ali were involved in the shootout in Carthage, about 15km north of Tunis.

The shooting broke out in the afternoon and was marked by sporadic but heavy gunfire, forcing local residents to barricade themselves inside their homes.

1. Thanks for the updates, Turborama, it is an incredible story
and I hope they can put together some kind of acceptable interim government that doesn't include any members of the previous regime as quickly as possible.

It just shows how you can push people so far, but there is a breaking point and I hope the rest of the world, with their corrupt, wealthy oligarchs imposing 'austerity' programs on ordinary people are getting a bit nervous that this might spread around the globe.

Kudos to the people of Tunisia. It is sad that so many died, but it did end far more quickly than anticipated so I hope that no more people die and they start building a Democratica government now.

As for the U.S., they just lost another dictator friend which is a good thing.
