'Baby Doc' Duvalier back in Haiti after long exile

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haitian national television says former dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier has returned to the country.

The stunning development caught the nation off-guard in a moment of political crisis. Duvalier landed on an Air France plane around 5:50 p.m. local time Sunday. He wore a dark suit and blue tie. He was greeted at the airport with hugs from supporters.

He was taken into an immigration office before customs. Duvalier fled into exile during a 1986 popular rebellion and has been living in Paris.

21. Nothing good ever came from the rule of the Duvaliers,
although from this article, it seems that some people have short memories:

"I don't know much about Jean-Claude Duvalier but I've heard he did good things for the country," said 34-year-old Joel Pierre. "I hope he will do good things again."

Nearby, 42-year-old Marline Joseph, living in the camp with her three kids, was also somewhat hopeful. "He's here, that's good. Now, what is he going to do for the country."

If they let him in, will they also let Aristide return? Or will the U.S. make sure that Aristide remains an exile?

Edited on Sun Jan-16-11 09:12 PM by ooglymoogly
For the state dpt.; the dictator, Baby doc and the Tonton Macoutes are just what the Dr ordered. A dictator who will ruthlessly honor, by torture and mayhem, the one sided trading agreements of the Clinton era; so they are making sure that Aristede does not return to disrupt their well laid plans for the continued rape of Haiti, while keeping its people beneath the wheel.

27. Of course Baby Doc is back.....
...since no one else gives a fuck about Haiti. What did anyone expect? If it hadn't been him, before too long it would have been someone just like him. So in the end his presence there is little worse than the total neglect they've already suffered at our hands. Haiti has shown the world for what it truly is: A planet full of selfish assholes who won't lift a goddamned finger unless there's something in it for them. A world whose mouths are full of platitudes and nice-sounding noise bites for the evening news.

Baby Doc's back because nature abhors a vacuum.

- If they'd only had some oil......

to run candidates and the democratic leadership which we ran out of the hemisphere. And about half the households in America who sent something in when they were asked to.

Btw, Haiti does have oil. There was a big find right around the time of the earthquake -- a little before, iirc.

36. Yes.
And in my view, we've reached the point -- worldwide -- where nothing short of a PLANET-WIDE GENERAL STRIKE to shut down all but the most necessary functions can wrest the power away from the corrupt few. All of which is theoretically possible, but will not likely happen.

Because to do so we'd all have to first agree that we're worth it and so is everyone else. That it's okay to be black or brown or red or yellow or white. That it doesn't matter if you're a woman doing a so-called "man's job." Or if you're a gay person who one day saves a Congresswoman's life. Or if you're transgender because you were born transgender and it's no one else's business what you are. Or that it matters which god you believe in -- or if you believe in one, or two or three gods -- or any at all. That it's not important if you're a redneck from Appalachia whose ancestors came here from Scotland in the early 1800s. Or a migrant worker from Guatemala whose people once lived all over the desert southwest of what is now called the USA. Or a Muslim from Detroit whose ancestors were brought to the New World in chains three centuries ago.

- That's how the powerful keeps their power over us. Not by addition, but by creating and maintaining divisions......

47. Throw out one group, another takes it's place.
Unless you are talking about an anarchist revolution.

Power corrupts. Power protects itself. People in power think they know better/are better than the people they rule.

Every revolution leads to the same attitude...just different people.

50. I will inot attempt.....
...trying to put a name to it. Call it whatever you will.

At best I think it might be described as an aspect or extension of NATURE. I've heard some call it a http://www.thevenusproject.com/a-new-social-design/resource-based-economy">resource-based society. One that assumes everyone in existence has an equal right to an equal share of the earth's bounty and resources. And where the hoarding and retention of its resources is not allowed to be held by a few, to the detriment of others.

- Whatever name that is, is what I'm talking about.

44. Guess who forced him out. Go on, guess.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Claude_Duvalier#Destabilization

"In January 1986, the Reagan administration began to pressure Duvalier to renounce his rule and to leave Haiti. Representatives appointed by Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga served as intermediaries who carried out the negotiations. At this point a number of Duvalierists, and business leaders, met with the Duvaliers and pressed for their departure. The United States rejected a request to provide asylum for Duvalier, but offered to assist with the Duvaliers' departure. Duvalier had initially accepted on January 30, 1986 and President Reagan actually announced his departure, based on a report from the Haitian CIA Station Chief who saw Duvalier’s car head for the airport. En route, there was gunfire and Duvalier’s party returned to the palace unnoticed by the U.S. intelligence team.<8> Duvalier declared “we are as firm as a monkey tail.” He departed on February 7, 1986, flying to France in an U.S. Air Force aircraft.<4>"

32. Should know tomorrow morning why he came back

He was escorted from the airport in a heavily guarded convoy. He and his wife are staying at the luxury Caribbean Hotel, in the ritzy part of Port-au-Prince where foreign embassies are located and where the very wealthy Haitians live.

Access to the hotel is restricted with Haitian national police standing guard outside. Blue Helmets (U.N. occupying troops) are posted inside the building. Security agents from a private company named METRO are also guarding Baby Doc at the hotel.

Michelle Bennett, Baby Doc's wife, emerged briefly this evening to announce a news conference at 9 a.m. Monday in which he will explain why he returned unexpectedly.

The secretary general of the OAS, Miguel Insulza, is scheduled to arrive in the capital on Monday in relation to the recent presidential elections that no one is recognizing because of massive electoral fraud.

The city is rife with rumors. At first it was thought that Aristide had arrived so a lot of people tried to get to the airport, but they were turned back.

Another rumor is that Hillary may make a stop in Haiti (think she is in the Middle East this weekend).

(from Wiki)

In 1990 the former first lady (Michelle Bennett) was divorced from Baby Doc. The former dictator filed for divorce in the Dominican Republic, accusing his wife of immoral acts. Madame Duvalier contested the decision, flying to the Dominican Republic to obtain a reversal before her husband prevailed in a third court. Madame Duvalier was at the time living with another man in Cannes; she was awarded alimony and child support.<11>
She lives in France, where she now uses her maiden name.<10>

---------------

Below photos Ven. news agency is running with the story. Photos apparently taken today after Baby Doc arrived. They have confused Bennett with this lady.

(Edit to identify lady in photos above.)

Duvalier reportedly lives modestly in Paris with Veronique Roy, his longtime companion and chief public-relations representative.<9> Roy is the granddaughter of Paul Magloire, President of Haïti from 1950 to 1956.<17><18>

-------------
Looking at Michelle Bennett's bio, seems she was a big, big high-roller, -- and corrupt to the bone.

53. Baby Doc’s return bodes ill for Haiti (Porter | Toronto Star)
Published On Mon Jan 17 2011

... In the fall of 2007, President René Préval told reporters that Duvalier could return to Haiti but would face justice for the deaths of thousands of people and the theft of millions of dollars.

And yet, there he was, stepping off an Air France flight, dressed in a jacket and tie, greeted in the airport by a small gang of supporters ...

So far, he’s said only that he wanted to be with his fellow countrymen on the anniversary of the earthquake, which killed more than 300,000 and left 1.5 million homeless.

But his timing also coincides with both the delivery of an independent report on last November’s messy national elections, and the original date of the second-ballot — since postponed to some time next month ...
