Buckinghamshire library emptied in cuts protest
Source: BBC

Library-users have emptied a town's library of books in protest against plans to close it down.

People have taken their maximum allowance of books from Stony Stratford library, Milton Keynes - clearing all 16,000 volumes from its shelves.

Milton Keynes Council is considering closing the library within its draft plans to save £26m in 2011/12.

Friends of Stony Stratford Library (FOSSL) said they were amazed at how everyone had pulled together.

'Clever idea'

Emily Malleson of FOSSL added that she calculated that books had been checked out at a rate of around 378 per hour.

Just in case any privatizer SCUM thinks they'll get the books for free!

NOT NOW!

1. Good for them!
My county council is planning to close nearly half of our libraries. Maybe people in the county should do the same (my own library is not marked for closure, but will probably not be able to provide as good a service once it becomes practically the only library in the city and demand increases drastically).

I don't think anyone is interested in free books (unfortunately the RW tend not to be that into books!); but in cutting public spending and public services for the sake of it.

3. Those books belong to the people. Don't let the corporations steal them from you!

Take them home and keep them safe until the libraries can open again.

4. Good for them
Libraries are so much more than only shelves with books. The service they provide is so much more. Too bad libraries are always the first place to close down as they are seen as an easy target.

the library will keep the doors locked for 3 weeks, then post a little message that no one notices in the paper stating that the library is open. Then after 4 more weeks go by they will send out overdue notices with late fines to 365-odd library card holders that have a loan on 16,000 books. The fines will finance the library for a year and pay for the library staff holiday party without touching the general tax fund.

Remember when you were ready to graduate from university, it wasn't the fear of a failing grade that kept students from their diploma, it was that forgotten library loan from sophomore year that caused you to panic.
