Hundreds of dead seals in Labrador
Source: CBC

People on the north coast of Labrador say scores of dead seals have been washing ashore since early December.

A conservation officer with the area's Inuit government estimated late last week that hundreds of adult and young seals have died in the area between Hopedale and Makkovik this winter.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is testing the carcasses, but Nunatsiavut conservation officer Ian Winters said many people in the area believe DFO hasn't acted quickly enough.

"I think they should have been up here earlier, if you're asking me. A lot of people said the same thing. So, maybe it's not on top of their agenda," he said.

Usually at this time of year seals are on sea ice south of Hopedale, said Winters, but he said there is very little ice there now.

1. Birds, fish, marine mammals
all are trying to tell us that something is WRONG with our air, water, etc... will we humans ever listen?

Between toxins and the loss of sea ice from warming...all of the evidence in my mind points directly to human's practices...

we are so selfish, so screwn... the world dies all around us and we continue to bicker like petty children. it doesn;t matter whose fault it is, we just need to clean up our act and pay attention to the natural world's indicators...

*sigh* like the frog in the pot o' boiling water, to stupid to jump to safety

8. "will we humans ever listen?"
Eventually. But by then I suspect it will far too late.

2. Baby Seal pups are the ones dying -- the kind they club to death?
Do they then collect the carcasses for the fur?

The article is so nonchalant about it all. Is there no such thing as a real investigative journalist in the mainstream
internet-o-sphere?

15. The sooner the better.
No sarcasm - I've just read too many depressing reports this morning on different
aspects of humans trashing the environment.
