Without aid, DPS may close half of its schools From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20
Source: Detroit News

Detroit — Detroit Public Schools would close nearly half of its schools in the next two years, and increase high school class sizes to 62 by the following year, under a deficit-reduction plan filed with the state.

The plan, part of a monthly update Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb gives the Department of Education, was filed late Monday to provide insight into Bobb's progress in his attempt to slash a $327 million deficit in the district to zero over the next several years. Under it, the district would slim down from 142 schools now to 72 during 2012-13.

Bobb has said school closures, bigger classes and other measures would be needed if he cannot get help from lawmakers to restructure finances in the state's largest school district.

3. But Geithner has explained again and again why

Helping the individual states would be adding to the deficit!!

Meanwhile in other news, the same bill that allows the very rich to hold on to the four percent of Bush Extended Tax Cuts - that same legislation gives the IRS some one hundred twenty billion dollars.

Do you know how many states would be facing hard times if that amount had been given to them? We could cut the top ten neediest states out of the deficit column. Or share it equally with all fifty states... Which would actually create jobs, and by creating jobs, we would be further knocking out the deficit.

Some two to three years from now, I fully expect to be reading about how no one in Washington DC knows what happened to at least half the one hundred and twenty billion bucks for the IRS. Just like the nine billion in Iraq that went Totally Missing, and the sixty eight billion in Afghanistan that is not missing, but is "unaccounted for."

7. Yeah, that caused me to re-read the line as I thought I'd skimmed it too quickly!
What's the betting that such actions would be "defended" by arguments
along the lines of "... but don't worry, at least half of them will be
permanent truants by that stage!"?
