US lawmaker Giffords 'had previous death threats'

Gabrielle Giffords, the US congresswoman shot and wounded in the Arizona shooting spree, had received death threats in the past and feared being shot at public event, her husband said in an interview on Tuesday.

Astronaut Mark Kelly told the ABC News program 20/20 in an interview to be broadcast Tuesday that the couple had discussed the threats.

"She's had death threats," he said. "As a lot of members of Congress have death threats. She's had them before."

Giffords had in fact feared an assault at a public event such as the one in Tuscon this month where the rampage occurred, he said.
