Palin's Favorability Plunges
Source: Teagon Goddard's Political Wire

A new USA Today/Gallup poll shows Sarah Palin's favorable rating has dropped to 38%, her lowest since just after bursting onto the national scene as Sen. John McCain's running mate in 2008. In the wake of controversy over her response to the Tucson shooting, her unfavorable rating hit a new high at 53%.

19. I thought it was lower
But I'm not surprised. There's a sizable chunk of the country who really pay very little attention to what she says either way. Many probably just think of her as the pretty lady that tried to run for VP. I've come across many conservative men too who think she's just being picked on for being an "attractive" and "intelligent" conservative woman (don't ask me what qualifies her as intelligent in their eyes).

122. did this chart maker take basic math? the MEDIAN of anything will always have 50% above, 50% below
not the average, which is the sum of the total value of all the variables, divided by the number of said variables

that chart is pure 'skit' (yes, that means shit) as we say here in Sweden, especially the symmetrical distribution pattern for a so-called average

was it lifted from the quack racialist Dr. Charles Murray's "Bell Curve"?

125. did you take basic psychometry
to understand that IQ scores are standardized with a mean of 100, and 50% of scores above the mean and 50% below? (well, technically not accounting for the scores of 100) - of course this is snark, for humor, but the jist of it is correct. That's kind of what "standardized" scores mean. We could talk about the reliability of the tests, ranges of scores, etc., but really, that's not the point here - it is a normal curve because the scores *are* normalized. If a person scores "100" then they score at the 50th percentile - the median - with 50% of scores below and 50% above - because the distribution of scores is standardized. That's sort of the joke.

126. your graph shows
Your graph shows that about 95% of the population is less than two standard deviations from the mean.
Far from what the caption implies, your chart says that most people are very close to average intelligence,
and far fewer than 50% are "below average" in any meaningful sense.

Now if you could show that your graph is wrong in that intelligence does not follow a Normal Distribution, you'd really have something.

It is actually a virtue in the United States to be willfully ignorant, and at least a quarter of our population take that very seriously. I always subtract 25% from figures like this, because I know there is absolutely nothing you can do about people like that. God WANTS them to be stupid.

4. That 38% is also the most rabid right-wingers and most likely to vote in a primary, imo.
I sure hope she runs though because even just running should implode the Republicans. Most Beltway Republicans/conservatives fully realize she's completely unsuited to be President, but her followers view any criticism of her as heresy. But in a primary, Mitt Romney or Newt or whoever is eventually going to HAVE to criticize her. They all spout the same idiotic talking points, so they can't critique her solely on policy. It will have to come down to ability, experience, etc, and her devotees will have a cow if anyone says she's not up to the job. So even if she loses, her adherents will be so pissed they may stay home. And if she wins a primary, she'll go down like a rock.

3. Is the mass hysteria finally subsiding?
Her career trajectory reminds me of those teenaged girls in the Salem Witch Trials.

For a couple years, everything they said was taken as gospel truth. Every time they swooned or fainted or complained of a headache, another person was thrown in jail or hanged.

Once the hysteria subsided, people just ignored them. A few months after it had all blown over, one of them tried the song and dance on a woman who annoyed her, and she looked like a fool.

Maybe the public has finally reached that stage with Sister Sarah?

30. I think the waning of attention is because her base is shrinking.
How can one be polarizing when one side disappear?

The left reacts because they can't stand her hateful spouting, the other small percentage she had on the right hate our President and for various reasons and see her as the savior. The moderates on the right aren't suffering her any more.

So that leaves her the geriatric bigots and stormfront.

You know most people don't read or watch politics. They know a name and that's it. "Oh that lady from Alaska...she seems nice." They poll everyone...not just political junkies like us.

I used to host a call-in radio dating show in Ohio. Even though it was dating and relationship stuff...in five hours we talked about kinds of stuff. Usually people had no idea. One lady one night thought the President's name was John F. Clinton. Yes, she was serious. She's probably one of the people polled about politics also.

Very important that we remember this.
Most Americans don't even know who their elected officials ARE. They can tell you who won American Idol last year or which team won the Super Bowl but they don't pay attention to the political process.

Sarah has charisma to them and you bet she'd get far more votes than any of us political junkies realize.

Then there are single issue voters who vote for the anti-choice candidate regardless of the rest of the platform. I also talked to way too many voters in 2008 who were voting for McCain because he was a war hero. They didn't care what his platform was, they just wanted a decorated veteran in the WH.

Welcome to DU :hi:

25. Just 22% See Palin as Effective President
This poll is from before the Tucson tragedy ~

Just 22% See Palin as Effective President

Overall views of Sarah Palin remain negative, according to the latest CBS News poll, with fewer than one in four Americans voicing a favorable opinion of the former Alaska governor. Almost half (48 percent) view her unfavorably. Republicans are far more likely than Democrats or independents to view her favorably.
Although she has not ruled out a bid for the White House in 2012, few Americans (22 percent) think Palin has the ability to be an effective president, while 64 percent say she's not up to the job. This view is shared by a majority of Democrats and independents. While Republicans are more divided, more of them think she does not have the ability to be an effective president than think she does.

Even her own Tea Party was 'divided' about her:

Even many Tea Partiers aren't jumping on board the Palin 2012 bandwagon. Less than half (47 percent) of those who describe themselves as Tea Party supporters think Palin has the ability to be an effective president, while 39 percent don't.

This poll was taken last October. I would like to see where she would be on the same today.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,129 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 1-5, 2010. Phone numbers were dialed from RDD samples of both standard land-lines and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

57. I doubt it. Different questions.
People did not want her running for office. Asking if she is a nice person, that is a very different question. Even I might say 'yes she may be' to that question.

Edited on Tue Jan-18-11 05:28 PM by Rozlee
and my mother asked me what street corner I was planning to stand on. True, she was raised in a generation when a proper lady didn't wear 5-inch heels, but I'd still think that they'd be more appropriate for a night out on the town or a lively session with your husband and not for giving speeches in front of your supporters while you're wearing a black leather jacket. But, that's just me.

identify with her, (even tho many of them are men!). They consider her a victim of "vicious" language from "the left" or from "the liberal media types". They, too, have no compassion for the victims of the shooting, it appears, they just feel Sarah (and HER family) are getting a raw deal. Not a single one of them thinks cross hairs on a campaign poster is offensive, but a bulls eye on a democratic poster is offensive, (follow THAT logic if you can).

I am on a message board where about 1/2 the posters are law and order conservative types, opposed to gay marriage, opposed to Health Care Reform, opposed to Obama's every move, let's face it they are ignorant racists and sexist men who have the hots for Sarah. Many of them love their guns, too.

They really believe Sarah has something important to say, she is their spokesperson. Very frightening, in every sense.

103. Why is all of the attention focused on un-electable Palin?
She is the sacrificial anode of the 2012 election. Are we giving Romney a free pass to become the R nominee? He has a lot of money and a national network to work from.

I think the R's are enjoying us trash Palin so their other candidates feel no heat and do not have to take early positions.

IMHO, of course.

132. Doesn't take much to crack the Beauty Queen mask and reveal the raging narcissist beneath.
When criticized, Sarah gets ANGRY. She tries to keep winking and smirking, but she's often looks like she's two seconds away from a screaming meltdown. Kind of like McCain, with less polish and experience.

And apparently no one has penetrated her ego with the old saw about, "When you find yourself in a hole, quit digging." Just the kind of folksy thing she'd say herself.

Should we tell her? :)
