Duvalier taken into custody
Source: CNN

Port-Au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) -- Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier was taken into custody Tuesday and transported to a courthouse where a hearing will determine whether he will be arrested.

Duvalier appeared from the hotel room where he has been holed up since his mysterious return to Haiti on Sunday. His hands free of handcuffs, he waived to a small crowd of supporters before heavily armed police escorted him away.

Duvalier's departure from the Karibe Hotel came after a morning of intense legal activity. A judge and chief prosecutor had entered the hotel to question Duvalier.

Outside the hotel in the swanky suburb of Petionville, throngs of journalists waited amid speculation that the former despot would be arrested.

8. Apparently, he lost most of it in a divorce.
Regardless, he must be delusional to have gone back. Half the population remembers his Bogymen and the remainder have heard the stories.

Instead, we get revisionist propaganda from one of the world's worst surviving dictator wanna-bes.

11. I think it was Amin who ate his opponents.
Reported as fact in the late '70s, I don't know if there's any revised evaluation of the truth of that assertion.

...just torturing and killing them.

6. bizarre
I figured there was some kind of deal in the works for him to show up. obviously not. the guy must be deranged to just get on a plane for Haiti, where of course he deserves the death sentence many times over.

19. The Haitian Constitution bans exile,
so I guess they've either got to try him and keep him locked up for the rest of his life, or let him go free.

I'd be getting a headache if I were the President of Haiti right now.

20. Memories of Paris in the air!
What was Baby Doc thinking when he got on that plane in Paris?

Did he foresee a motor cavalcade in his future, one which took him back to the Presidential palace, with everyone cheering and happy that the long national nightmare was finally over.

His local supporters were worried how to best control the wave of popular support that would surely greet his arrival. Turns out that wasn't going to be a problem.

21. Throw away the key but it's just a sham show. Nothing will happen to him
Duvalier wasn't whisked back into Haiti, with a French Diplomatic passport, without assurances that nothing would happen to him.

22. Jean-Claude Duvalier charged with theft over 15-year rule
Haitian prosecutors have charged the former leader Jean-Claude Duvalier with theft and misappropriation of funds during his 15-year rule, which ended in 1986.

Mr Duvalier, also known as Baby Doc, was detained and charged two days after his surprise return to Haiti from exile.

But human rights groups say Mr Duvalier should also face trial for the torture and murder of thousands of people.
