Michigan manufacturers call for business tax slash ($1.8B deficit)
Source: Detroit Free Press

Michigan’s manufacturers pay 29% higher overall business taxes than those in other states, and the personal property tax on equipment is largely to blame, according to a study by Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA).

The report released today shows that Michigan manufacturers pay 14.2% state and local taxes on gross surpluses, compared to 11% of the U.S. average.

“We’re getting our butt kicked on personal property taxes,” said Mike Johnston, MMA vice president for government affairs. He said the tax should be eliminated, as many other states have done.

The personal property tax generates about $1 billion in revenue, some of it used by local governments.

5. Okay, here's the deal
Manufacturers can get lower rates, but only ONLY if they hire enough to cut Michigan's unemployment rate to 4%. If they fail, they pay every penny of the tax savings they stole from the state with interest. Do we have a deal, MMA? Pay for performance. Let the market dictate the results. Come on, you stalwart captains of industry, you masters of the universe: Can you walk your talk, guaranteed?

1)Cite high unemployment, demand tax cuts, promise more jobs
2)Collect tax cut, pocket profits, forget hiring
3)Return to step 1

8. Missouri Ford plant to get new vehicle, keep 3,750 jobs
Ford announced today that it will spend $400 million to retool and keep open a Missouri plant that employs nearly 3,750. The automaker said the Claycomo plant near Kansas City will get an unspecified new vehicle to build after production of the current Escape ends this year.

The new-generation Escape will be built at Louisville. Missouri granted generous tax incentives last year to try to keep open the plant, which also has one shift building F-150 pickups. Ford said the tax benefits "played a role" in deciding to retool and give a new vehicle to the plant, which was built in 1951.
