Lieberman won't run for re-election
Source: greenwich times

U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who carved out a national profile through his run for the vice presidency and his often unpredictable streak of bipartisan independence, will not seek re-election, three sources close to the Connecticut senator said Tuesday.

Lieberman has called a news conference for Wednesday in Stamford to disclose his plans.

The news came only hours after independent Susan Bysiewicz, the former veteran secretary of the state who was ruled ineligible last year to run for attorney general, announced her candidacy Tuesday for Lieberman's seat.

64. Lamont's done. He ran for statewide office twice and lost both times.
He sank his considerable fortune into both races only to lose. The gubernatorial race was his to lose - he started out with a huge lead - and he did.

He even said during the governor's race that he didn't really want to be a Senator.

WASHINGTON – Sen. Joe Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee who angered the party by backing Republican John McCain for president in 2008, will retire and not seek a fifth term, Democratic officials said Tuesday.

I think he saw the handwriting on the wall.
I saw in a few places (prior to the 2010 election) that McMahon was considering running again.
She expected to lose to Blumenthal, but felt she could take Lieberman.
He probably felt he couldn't siphon off enough republican votes from her to get elected again.

He couldn't be elected in CT now. The GOP are feeling their oats and won't run him again, and the Democrats certainly wouldn't vote for him! (Even those who were foolish enough to vote for him last time. A group that does NOT include me!)

Now maybe we can get a Democrat in there. Though please, not Bysiewicz.

We haven't had a Democrat in that seat since Lowell Weicker. Oh, wait...

Not CT Dems, we know that from 2006--and the was before he hit the campaign trail against Obama.

That wouldn't happen in '12, as Linda McMahon, Simpson, and Foley perhaps were going for it. Likewise, Bysiewicz is already in on the Dem side, and Murphy and Courtney thinking about it, too.

He was toast. I thought that was blindingly obvious in '06, but people seem to be taking this as big news. *shrug*

it was not only the regular poll numbers but that his office had likely done some internal polling as well and seen that he was facing a very steep uphill battle next year.

I wonder what cabinet position he's been promised by the GOP?

74. Lamont has very little chance
And, while I like Bysiewicz, I think her horrible 2010 has ruined her chances as well: she was leading in the polls for governor, then withdrew from that race to run for Attorney General, a lower position. Then, she was ruled ineligible to be AG and looked weak in fighting for the right to run. Then, there was the ballot fiasco in Bridgeport...

Also, after Bysiewicz dropped out of the governor's race, Lamont was leading in the polls for the Democratic nomination. However, he got hammered for ducking debates with Malloy and ended up getting swamped in the primary. So, I think he is down & out politically.

I suspect that the Democratic nominee will be one of the Democratic reps in Congress - Chris Murphy & Joe Courtney have shown interest, and John Larson & Rosa DeLauro would also be strong nominees, but neither has ever run a tough race, while Murphy & Courtney have.

77. Rosa DeLauro has declined to run for the Senate
and I think Larson has too.

Bysiewicz is the only official candidate running so far. Murphy and Courtney have expressed interest but neither have set up an exploratory committee yet.

I wonder if McMahon will run again, or do Republicans need somebody different in 2012 (Schiff, Simmons, Griebel, etc)?

It appears that the wrestling queen will run against any Democratic opponent that vies for that seat. I don't think that the good people of Connecticut will go for her, as she lost by a large margin in her last bid.

Spend a couple of years making lots of money giving speeches, then become a lobbist, all while collecting a nice retirement check too. Why would he not want to retire?

90. Buh-bye, Senator Palpatine!
I will admit that he finally did something right when he helped to push DADT repeal through, but on just about everything else, especially health care reform, he completely pissed me off.

Not. Gonna. Miss. Him.

My bet is that he gets a lucrative gig working as an AIPAC lobbyist...

96. Instead of just bashing Sen. Leiberman and focusing on the negative,
why not at least give him some credit for the good things he has done and how he served the party. He was his own man even if that meant he did not always agree with the Democrat Party. He always tried to find common ground in order to get things done.
He was our VP candidate with Gore as our Presidential candidate in 2000, and he has always been a champion for global warming issues. The Department of Homeland Security was his idea. He voted for the health care bill, the START Treaty, DADT and even though he is not a progressive, he has always been a Democrat at heart. He could have become a Republican, but he chose to retire.

One wonders how differently he'd been viewed had Gore become president in 2000 as he should have.

By the way, there is no such newspaper as the Greenwich Times.

I am still 99.99% certain he's going to be the GOP nominee. Scoff if you must, but every voting decision he's made over the last year has been the one to make if he wants to run for president with the other team.
