FBI: Pipe Bomb Found On MLK Parade Route
Source: ABC News

A suspicious backpack left along a Martin Luther King Day parade route in Spokane, Wash., held a radio-controlled pipe bomb that could have sprayed shrapnel at marchers in the parade.

Three parade workers spotted a backpack with visible wires on a bench at North Washington Street and West Main Avenue in downtown Spokane about 30 minutes before the parade was scheduled to begin Monday. Authorities rerouted the parade while officers from the Spokane Police Department's bomb disposal unit worked on the suspected bomb.

FBI special agent Frank Harrill, the supervisory senior resident agent in Spokane, told ABC News that the backpack was "a viable device."

"The potential for lethality was clear," Special Agent Harrill said. The local bomb squad neutralized the device, said Harrill.

According to an FBI press release, "Subsequent preliminary analysis revealed the backpack contained a potentially deadly destructive device, likely capable of inflicting multiple casualties."

1. Here's a wild guess, stay with me...
The would-be bomber doesn't listen to either Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow.

8. It wasn't a pipe bomb.
It was a more sophisticated, home made explosive device. It had it's own shrapnel packed in, and was placed on a metal bench, with a brick wall behind it, to direct the blast at the parade.

Someone knew what they were doing.

As reported on Rachel Maddow.

11. incident described as 'domestic terrorism'
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 01:37 AM by RamboLiberal
SPOKANE, Wash. — A backpack found along the route of the Martin Luther King Jr. march in Spokane contained a bomb "capable of inflicting multiple casualties," the FBI said Tuesday, describing the case as "domestic terrorism."

The FBI said the Swiss Army-brand backpack was found about 9:25 a.m. PST on Monday on a bench at the northeast corner of North Washington Street and West Main Avenue in downtown Spokane.

In an interview on msnbc cable's "The Rachel Maddow Show," Spokesman-Review reporter Thomas Clouse said confidential sources told him that the device was equipped with a remote control detonator and contained shrapnel.

A bomb disposal unit was called in and neutralized the device with a robot. The FBI said in a statement on Tuesday that "the backpack contained a potentially deadly destructive device, likely capable of inflicting multiple casualties."

-----

"At that point, it falls directly in the realm and sphere of domestic terrorism," Harrill told the Associated Press. "Clearly, there was some political or social agenda here."

-----

The Spokane region and adjacent northern Idaho have had numerous incidents of anti-government and white supremacist activity during the past three decades.
