NAACP accuses Maine Governor LePage of fabricating details of invitation

Gov. Paul LePage lied last week when recounting an exchange with the NAACP concerning an invitation to a campaign forum at a Maine prison, the head of the state organization said Tuesday.

In his now-famous "kiss my butt" television interview, LePage said the NAACP had invited him to meet with black prisoners and that he declined, but told the group, "I would be more than happy to go, but I would meet all prisoners – and that wasn't acceptable to them, so tough luck."

That exchange never happened, said Rachel Talbot Ross, state director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and president of the NAACP Portland branch.

The e-mailed invitation to LePage, dated June 14 and reviewed by The Portland Press Herald, makes no mention of race and simply says the candidates forum would be at the prison in Warren. It was to be held before all the prisoners, Ross said.

I guess he's not used to having his actions and his words analyzed by the press, and now that he's been caught doing this, it's just going to make him more paranoid and irrational. It's going to be a great time to be a journalist in Maine - no end of material to write about!

"...But NAACP leaders pointed out that the event was a voter registration drive for all prisoners — not merely black inmates — and that half of the members of the NAACP chapter at Maine State Prison in Warren are white. Furthermore, prison policies would prohibit segregated events...."

ALL prisoners. The Governor lied. Big surprise.

6. LePage is living down to my lowest expectations.

It was evident during his campaign that he has no conscience but he also seems to lack common sense. It won't take long before even his supporters will cringe every time they see his name in the local paper.
