Group: Scalia, Thomas had Citizens United conflict

To mark Friday’s anniversary of a court decision that allowed corporations to sink millions into politics, Common Cause, a reform group, is asking the Department of Justice to investigate alleged conflicts of interest involving two Supreme Court justices – in hopes of forcing the court to vacate the 5-4 ruling.

Common Cause officials and at least one legal expert acknowledged the difficulty of getting the landmark case overturned in this way. But in a document to be submitted to the department Thursday, Common Cause President Bob Edgar cites appearances by Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Antonin Scalia at retreats sponsored by Koch Industries, a corporation run by two major Republican donors who helped finance some of the new GOP groups founded after the ruling.

“It appears both justices have participated in political strategy sessions, perhaps while the case was pending, with corporate leaders whose political aims were advanced by the decision,” the Common Cause petition asserts.

In addition, Common Cause argues that Thomas should have recused himself because his wife was the founder of Liberty Central, a conservative group funded with a small group of anonymous donors who endorsed candidates in about a dozen 2010 races.

12. These people have no sense of honor

And while on the topic of "honor", let's get real. There is very little honor these days. There are very few real heroes. Most of those lauded as heroes by the MSM and our own government, are those who blindly obey authority. Those that question authority, seek the truth, and act on them -- are villified in our society.

It's pretty dark out there. The SCOTUS is infested with obedient political hacks.

10. We deserve to trust our Supreme Court
If we don't trust them, then it's up to us to SAY SOMETHING about it. That's why Common Cause started this research in the first place, because we can't just sit around lamenting that things are bad. Step 1: sign our petition (http://bit.ly/gc8zEdu) to demand an investigation by the DOJ. Step 2: get a friend to sign it. It'll take a big number to convince the DOJ to do this, and we all deserve the answer! (Nikki4CommonCause)

11. Common Cause is doing the work of the DOJ
which is extremely weak under this administration. DOJ has a boneless spine when it comes to pursuing justice for We the People.

Will donate to Common Cause.

17. Another way to help Common Cause - rally with us in the desert!
Thank you for the support for our cause, and for signing the petition.

There's another way you can help bring attention to this issue--join us on January 30 for a rally in Palm Springs, Calif., right outside the posh resort where the Koch brothers and their Billionaires Caucus will be planning their corporate takeover of our democracy. The influence of the super-rich has far-reaching implications, not just for our elections but for our economy, environment, health care, employment, and pretty much everything that's part of our current recession. The richer (and more powerful) they get, the less the voice of the regular person is heard. More info soon, but the more people we have on hand, the louder our collective voices will be! (Nikki@CommonCause)
