More than 100 suspected members and associates of six mafia families have been arrested in what the FBI described as the biggest organized crime round-up in New York history.

Significant leaders of the Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese, Bonanno and Colombo families and also the DeCavalcante of New Jersey were among those being arrested, NBC New York reported.

The charges ranged from murder to extortion and illegal gambling, officials told NBC News.

Hundreds of FBI officials, NYPD officers, state police and U.S. marshals were involved in the operation, which took place across the tri-state area.

1. Mobsters pain, lawyers delight.
I think a lot of defendant lawyers are happy about this turn of event.

2. Hmmm, makes you wonder who they got to turn informer.
They need some really solid testimony to bust that many people at once.

Why do I get the odd feeling that a few people are getting ready to or have already entered the witness protection program?

I'm just curious how high up a person they got to testify that resulted in that many arrests.

18. FBI arrests 100 mafia suspects
Source: Associated Press

US federal agents have arrested more than 100 suspected mobsters in a crackdown on New York's five mafia crime families.

The FBI said most of the arrests were made this morning. Many were in Brooklyn, but they occurred throughout New York City, in New Jersey and New England. Charges include murder, extortion and drug trafficking.

The arrests were the result of multiple investigations. Federal investigations aided by turncoats have decimated the families' ranks in recent years and resulted in lengthy prison terms for several leaders.

A federal judge in Brooklyn sentenced John "Sonny" Franzese, 93, to eight years in prison last Friday for extorting Manhattan strip clubs and a pizzeria on Long Island.

24. how come they never seem to round up Greek and Chinese mafias?
There are criminal organizations within almost every ethnic pocket of the City. The Greeks and the Chinese have some fairly large operations. Even La M has a presence here. IMHO the Italians are the most American of the mafias at this point.
