Colombia: Palestine should have its own state
Thursday, 20 January 2011 13:50 Jim Glade

Palestine should have its own state, said Colombia's ambassador to the United Nations Thursday.

"The position of Colombia is the recognition of the State of Israel but also that Palestinians should have their own state," Colombia's ambassador to the UN Nestor Osorio told W Radio.

According to the ambassador, Colombia does not, however, agree with Palestinian settlements in Israel.

Earlier this month Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin said, "We are taking the same steps as the UN. The day they reach a peace agreement with Israel we will recognize the Palestinian state."

2. Judi, this is mere posturing by rightwing Colombian government

Note the remark by the ambassador -- Colombia recognizes Israel, but Palestinians "should have their own state." "Should," as in the distant future.

Then look at Holguin's remark: Colombian is heeding what the UN (i.e. U.S. and Israel) tells Bogota what to do. If someday there is a U.N.-brokered settlement, THEN Colombia will recognize a Palestinian state. But not now.

This is not the same as the recent, out-and-out recognition of a free and independent Palestine (with 1967 borders) by Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Jamaica, Bolivia, Paraguay and Chile and I think Peru (not sure). Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba had previously granted recognition.

Colombia under uribito was tight with the Israelis, who sent considerable aid for Colombia's endless battle against the FARC and AUC narco-traffickers. Those weapons included Kfir fighter jets.

3. ;You're right. The wording is much different. They took advantage of the timing of Chile's move
to make their statement of support for Palestine in the present! How slippery.

I recall when the colossal AUC mass murdering, torturing Carlos Castano was active, they brought Yair Klein, the ex-Israeli military guy to Colombia to train his paras in the monstrous arts. He was deeply engaged in the Colombian military-connected paras and their war against the poor.

Didn't know they got large machinery, like the fighter planes from Israel, too.

It's true, if you just glance at the article, you assume they are in solidarity with the progressive Latin American countries which have formally announced real support for Palestine now. The truth does lie completely elsewhere.

This is a good reminder to keep this misleading statement in mind for the record.
