TIRANA — Clashes between demonstrators and security forces during an anti-government protest in Tirana Friday left three people dead and dozens injured as a months-long political crisis in Albania escalated.

Three people who had been killed by gunshot wounds had been brought to the city's military hospital, Sami Koceku, head of the hospital's emergency services told AFP by phone.

It was still unclear who had shot the three demonstrators. Police were yet to confirm the toll, but hospital sources reported 55 injured, of whom 25 were police officers and 30 civilians.

Friday's clashes marked the first time opposition protests had ended in violence since the political crisis erupted after disputed 2009 general elections.

Thousands of protesters demanding his government's resignation were confronted by riot police in the capital Tirana.

An opposition leader said the crowd had been provoked and police had behaved unprofessionally.
