Gunman shoots four cops in Detroit precinct
Edited on Sun Jan-23-11 06:38 PM by SpartanDem
Source: Detroit Free Press

Four police officers in Detroit’s Northwestern District were shot this afternoon when a gunman came in and opened fire, the Free Press has learned.

According to Sgt. Todd Eby, the gunman walked in at about 4:20 p.m. with a pistol grip shotgun. Unprovoked, he just started shooting, said Eby, who was sitting at his desk when the gunfire erupted.
Eby said officers in the building returned fire, killing the man.

Shot were Commander Brian Davis, Sgt. Ray Saati and Officer David Anderson, Eby said. A fourth person, a female sergeant whose name was not released, was also hit. The four have been transported to Sinai Grace hospital in Detroit.

Eby called the incident “absolutely horrifying.”

A press conference was scheduled for 6 p.m. Stay with the Free Press for more details.

Sounds like either he had real grudge against police or was looking to commit suicide.

Please don't point to Europe. They had low homicide rates BEFORE banning guns and homicide rates din't improve AFTER banning guns.

The UK has higher violent crime rate than the US. Banning guns didn't change that actually the difference between violent crime rate in UK and US is larger now than 20 years ago (as in worse in UK).

Edited on Sun Jan-23-11 07:39 PM by Edweird
There have been essentially zero crimes committed by lawful 'machine gun' owners.
The AWB only addresses the APPEARANCE of common SEMI AUTO firearms. High capacity magazines were just as available during the ban as they were before, only they generated greater profits for the sellers due to artificially high prices.

79. Anybody with a halfway decent set of machine tools can build a machine gun.
They can also convert any legal semi-auto to full-auto illegally. Whats your plan, to ban metal lathes and drill presses? Lawful owners of class III weapons account for virtually 0% of crime. Criminals will get guns no matter what the law says (as your example shows quite clearly) - breaking the law is what makes them criminals.... 'Prohibition' of things the citizens want has a pretty dismal record here in the US, and it should be clear that we like our guns.

80. Well, lets look over at, oh, pipe bombs, and compare:
How do we keep them from being used daily in crimes? They also aren't complex, and can be built in any decent shop. They're also illegal to have/use without a license (but I think we agree that a license isn't the issue).

However, there aren't mass production lines to create millions of bombs for "hunting". There isn't an active "pipe bomb" lobby. We don't have recreational explosive ranges. We don't make thousands of movies that glorify pipe bombers. There aren't bumper stickers about "cold dead hands" and pipe bombs. We don't give children toy pipe bombs to play with. We don't sell them pre-made at "private shows" without (or even with) background checks. We don't quibble over black paint making a "hunting pipe bomb" into an "assault pipe bomb".

I don't doubt that there are lots of pipe bombs being made (and used in crimes, even), but culturally, we don't encourage use and ownership of pipe bombs as an acceptable, or desirable, social value.

123. What is it with you and the pipe bombs? We are talking about guns.
I really don't 'get' the parallel you're trying to draw between guns and pipe bombs.
People own guns because they like them.
Teenagers and rednecks make and detonate pipe bombs... also because they like them.
Pipe bombs are 'single use' devices. They explode.
Guns are durable and can last generations. Exploding guns are not at all popular. People like their hands and eyesight.
There are numerous sports and sporting activities that firearms are suitable for. All I can think of for pipe bombs is 'fishing', but fishing with a pipe bomb is certainly not very sporting.
I have a CCW. I can carry my gun many places. Even with the proper permits for manufacturing and possessing pipe bombs you are still gonna get in a shit ton of trouble if you take it to the store with you.

People like guns. Americans, specifically, like their guns, but we are by no means the only ones. If there were no guns in movies people would still own them. As a corollary, even if there were no guns or knives people would still kill each other. That's why the murder rate in prison is only nominally lower than that of the 'free world'.

128. Hunting with a firearm isn't exactly sporting, either.
Unless, of course, the deer (or whatever) also has a gun. Or pipe bomb, to put in your normal path.

The point about pipe bombs is to highlight the obsession with explosive devices, be it in a pipe, or a barrel.

Guns are reusable pipe bombs. I do not disagree.

Edited on Mon Jan-24-11 10:43 AM by Statistical
One would imagine that after 17 years you could inform yourself.

Machineguns (and other NFA weapons) were heavily regulated before the "scary black rifles ban" (AWB).
The AWB "scary black rifles ban" had nothing to do with machineguns.
Machineguns (and other NFA weapons) are still heavily regulated after the "scary black rfiles ban" (AWB) expired.

38. No, it isn't.
I own a Winchester Model 12 shotgun. It was my grandfather's. It was manufactured around 1924. It holds 7 shells, I think. It looks very much like this one:

This is a different brand, but similar shotgun. It is functionally identical to my grandfather's shotgun. It just has a pistol grip stock.

This does not magically change it into an "assault weapon".

52. Your grandad's shotgun
is a fine hunting weapon. The pistol grip weapon you show is much shorter and is designed specifically for shooting people. Other short, pistol grip shotguns have high capacity drum fed magazines. Most of these are semi or full automatic weapons. They definitely are assault weapons. Also, guns like your grandfather's were used in Vietnam and most police cars carry them still. They are not there for shooting birds. The key word here is weapon. All firearms are weapons, first and foremost. Now, a semi-automatic, drum fed shotgun carrying 12 rounds can kill more people quicker than a standard 7 shot pump gun, but both guns can kill lots of people, quickly and efficiently. Edge weapons and even clubs also kill but less efficiently, and their use takes more guts, strength and skill. Guns are far deadlier and have been the world's weapon of choice for centuries when committing mass slaughter for a reason.

You can put a pistol grip stock on any shotgun you like. Just adding a pistol grip goes not make it an assault weapon.

My grandfather's Model 12 holds 5 rounds of ammo in a tubular magazine, just like many shotguns do. Some shotguns are made for self-defense, and hold up to 7 rounds, but all of them available for civilian purchase are still longer than 18".

Here is my grandfather's shotgun with a shorter barrel and a bayonet lug:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Trench_Shotgun_win12_800.jpg

Is this now magically an assault weapon? It holds the same number of rounds, and is functionally identical.

Also, guns like your grandfather's were used in Vietnam and most police cars carry them still. They are not there for shooting birds.

Yes, they definitely were. The Model 12 is unusual in that it has no trigger disconnect - the gun will fire as long as you pump the action. But the civilian version is functionally identical to the ones used by the police and military.

Since I know of no full-auto shotgun currently available to the Civilian market, you credibility just took a steep dive.

I have a home defense shotgun much like the one pictured above. Only difference is it doesn't have the pistol grip. Is it an "assault weapon"? I can change barrels on it in a few minutes and have bird/skeet, and rifled slug capability. Is it not a "hunting weapon"?

Guns have also been the choice for self-defense tool for the same reasons you state above.

90. What, shotguns? My dad fed the family at least one winter using one of those.
Venison all winter, and my mom knew how to cook it. My aunt and her husband came over for dinner one night; my mom made 'porcupines'. If you don't know, it's not actual porcupine meat; it's usually ground beef, rolled into several large oblong balls (about the size and shape of an Idaho potato) and then baked with a thick gravy until fully cooked through. You can also add noodles. Try to find a recipe online; they're easy, tasty, and filling.

She used venison that night, and my aunt just hates venison, but she thought my mom used beef. We also had venison steaks several times. As much as you may hate those guns, a shotgun once helped my parents put meat on the table through the winter. Of course, that's pretty easy to do when Bambi breeds like Thumper :D

I can't find anything wrong with shotguns themselves; the fact that they're so old (and, as the pictures show, in beautiful condition) is worth the visual.

74. How so?
It is functionally identical. It fires the same ammunition at the same velocities at the same rate of fire. The Model 12 holds 5 rounds, the Remington 870 holds up to 8.

How does the number of shells it carry change its functionality?

Oh, and you can easily use them for hunting. All you have to do is put a plug in the magazine to limit the number of rounds it will carry.

88. A short barreled shotgun
with a bayonet lug is a pretty good indication it was designed to shoot people, and plugging the magazine will not make it a good hunting gun even if you use it that way. I agree that the terms used to describe different types of firearms blur easily, especially when they are modified.

Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:

* Folding or telescoping stock
* Pistol grip
* Bayonet mount
* Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
* Grenade launcher (more precisely, a muzzle device which enables the launching or firing of rifle grenades)

would have covered the weapon I saw the other day at the firing range.

The owner started with one of these:

(note the flash suppressor)

and replaced the stock stock with an adjustable one from Tapco

(he did that so that so he and his kids could share the gun and also so he didn't have to buy new guns as the kids grew in size).

voila! you have an assault weapon consisting of a:

10 shot detachable magazine(strike 1); .22LR Ruger with a flash suppressor (strike 2); and an adjustable stock (strike 3)...the weapon of choice by criminals everywhere.

Edited on Sun Jan-23-11 09:39 PM by jpak
there is no reason to have a shotgun that can hold that many rounds - is there any state that DOESN'T limit hunting firearms to 5 rounds (4 in the magazine, 1 in the chamber)???

and federal waterfowl rules require a plug limiting total shotgun capacity to 3 rounds.

10 round magazine shotguns suck

yup!

There is valid lawful reason for shotguns that carry >4 rounds rounds.
No Police shotgun in the country has only a 4 round magazine.

125. Sorry, Michael.
I'm sorry if I offended you, Michael, that was not my intent.

The response "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" is a common phrase that I assumed you would have heard before. It is a tongue-in-cheek response to a question with no reasonable answer, because the response itself has no reasonable answer, otherwise known as a "loaded question":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question

In other words, you can't reasonably answer the question "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" Because to say "no" implies that you currently beat your wife, and to say "yes" implies that you used to beat your wife. There is no way to answer the question with a simple "yes" or "no" to state that you never have beaten your wife. This is a very common rhetorical question. The Wikipedia article above calls it "traditional".

You asked a loaded question, "so is 4 your acceptable number dead?" and I demonstrated that I understood your question was loaded by providing what I thought was the prime example of loaded questions. The question is not actually about domestic violence. I'm sorry if you were offended.

As they were trying to tie up the store owner, he took out a handgun from his waistband and fatally shot one of the suspects, Smith said.

http://charlotte.news14.com/content/top_stories/628167/man-at-atm-fires-back-at-would-be-armed-robber
According to police, the man was attempting to use a Cash Points ATM on Eastway Drive at North Tryon Street around 11 p.m. A suspect seemingly saw that as an opportunity and tried to rob the victim at gunpoint.

However, that victim was also armed. He shot the suspect twice in the leg.

http://www.wxix.com/Global/story.asp?S=12299813
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Cincinnati Police are investigating a shooting where it appears a robber left the scene with the victim's cell-phone in his hand, and a slug from the victim's gun in his lower abdomen.

Police say the robber ran into someone with a concealed-carry permit, and at some point the would-be victim was able to get his gun out and shoot the suspect, who took off running from the shooting scene on Rosemont Avenue south of Glenway in West Price Hill.

17. Screw gun-control
How about a real conversation about "health care reform?" Many in our nation suffer from either PTSD or just "ordinary" depression from being outta the job-market for so long.

When the heck are we going to have an adult discussion about health-care-access as a human right, mental-health parity, or simply the act of prevention over the acts of reaction?

I swear I'm screaming into the wind sometimes.... ...though, in truth, I know I'm not alone....

Actually, one of the people that helped subdue him was armed, and ready to act if the shooting had not stopped. Yes, thankfully in this case people were able to get to the shooter while he was reloading. This is not always the case, as in the Virginia Tech shooting, and at the immigration services shooting in New York.

On rare occasion unarmed people do overcome armed people. But most people prefer to face down an armed opponent with some sort of arm themselves, which is, of course, why both police and citizens carry them.

102. Lives were saved. Thanks for proving the point.
The cops were able to return fire and use lethal force to stop the attack.

Had the cops been unarmed we likely would have been reading about another Virginia Tech or Tuscon incident.

Killing a larger number of armed persons is difficult. They tend to shoot back which requires taking cover and limiting outgoing fire. Killing a larger number of unarmed persons is pitifully easy. Just point and shoot.

Often times the attacker has no specific aggression towards cops. They simply know it is a way to die when they are unwilling or unable to kill themselves alone.

get 2/3 of the states together and amend the Constitution.

I would speculate that:

Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Vermont, North Carolina and South Carolina

would not support the repeal.

None of the Bill of Rights have been repealed and I really don't think that we should start.
