Girl's cake sells for $10,000 at fair
Source: Associated Press

LAKELAND, Fla. - A 9-year-old girl's cake brought in a lot of dough in Florida.

Cash, that is - $10,000 to be exact. A fertilizer company paid the sum for Abigail Putnam's cake at the Polk County Youth Fair. Abigail's father, Adam Putnam, is the state's agriculture commissioner. He says even she knew a cake isn't worth $10,000 and donated $9,000 of her money back to the fair.

Fair officials tell the Ledger of Lakeland that the company, Mosaic, typically buys many things from the students who sell livestock and baked goods at the annual event.

Mosaic spokesman Russell Schweiss says an employee had been given a lump sum to buy items at the fair. He says the company is investigating the pricey cake purchase.

A fertilizer company purchased a $10,000 cake from the Republican State Agriculture Commissioner.

How is this not considered a bribe?

10. Yeah, I would call that a bribe.
If it's not in direct contravention of the state's ethics laws, then it NEEDS to be.

13. uhh, I hate to tell you this, but
there are no state ethic laws here in sunny floriduh, and the current legislature would like to keep it that way. Whenever anything like this comes up, like that state rep whos wife just happened to be given a 450K house in Arkansas that he knew nothing about because they keep their finances seperate, he was told to become more involved in her life.

Just google, Tallahassee District Court Taj Mahal, you'll see there is no shame at all here.

16. Wow, I've been making cakes for people for much, much
longer than that little girl has existed. If I added up every dime I've ever gotten from a cake, it wouldn't come anywhere near $10,000.

A nasty business that, and radioactive too.
