* U.S. has concerns over economic reform, Mubarak's lack of succession planning
* Cables also reveal Washington sees Egypt as an important and -- until now -- stable ally

The U.S. relationship with President Hosni Mubarak's Egypt is full of contradictions and tensions, according to recently published U.S. diplomatic cables, but is also underpinned by similar basic interests in a rough and unpredictable part of the world.

A CNN analysis of secret and confidential cables published by WikiLeaks and its media partners reveals U.S. frustration with Mubarak's lack of succession planning, concerns over stuttering economic reform and private criticism of the Mubarak government's hard line toward domestic opponents.

But the cables also show that Washington sees Egypt as an important and -- until now -- stable ally on issues, including Iran's nuclear program, promoting negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and making life difficult for Hamas in Gaza.

And above all, Egypt is regarded as a moderate bulwark against Iranian-sponsored Islamist fundamentalism.

6. The hypocrisy is astounding.
The US claims to be a promoter of freedom and democracy in the world, yet here it is supporting a dictator who routinely tortures his own people and has likely tortured suspects that the US has sent to his country for interrogation purposes. People in the Arab world are not dumb to this observation.

7. He's not a dictator, he's a "friend".
We have lots of them around the world. The Saudis are our BFFs!

Isn't it nice to be so popular?

9. Tweets were that Obama has lost all moral authority to use the word democracy
in any sentence.

The statements coming out of this administration, especially from Hillary's guy Crowley and Biden aren't going over well.
