Former South African president 'responded very well' to treatment for 'acute respiratory infection,' doctor says

Nelson Mandela was discharged from hospital Friday after a doctor said he had "responded very well" to treatment for a lung infection.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, speaking at a press conference, repeated previous assurances, saying there was "no need for us to panic."

"There is no need for us to fear for Madiba's (Mandela's) health. He is in good health," Motlanthe said.

3. Yes, that is good news, but he is 92 and people do not live forever.
Is the point to squeeze every last bit of life out of people regardless of the quality of that life especially in their 10th decade?

4. I'm sure he could have refused treatment if he wished.
Age should have nothing to do with that. He could live to be 100 or more. If a person is sick and wants care, he or she should get that care whether they are 20 or 80.

5. You don't know that and I certainly did not say care should not be given.
But when people are in their 90s they likely do not have much longer to live and when that life has been good and long and meaningful, and their dying is peaceful I will shed no tears of sorrow over their passing.
