Trade ministers urged to prod Doha talks

Trade ministers meeting on Friday must give negotiators in the long-running Doha talks the green light to make more concessions for a deal that all can sell to their voters, trade policy-makers said.

The European Union, the world's biggest exporter, is hosting a dinner for trade ministers from the other key players -- Australia, Brazil, China, India, Japan and the United States -- during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The seven will take stock of the Doha round. Members of the World Trade Organization have agreed to intensify the pace of negotiations, already in their 10th year, after the G20 urged them to use 2011 as a window of opportunity to reach a deal.

"What we will try to get from ministers is acceleration," said WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy. He will not attend Friday's dinner, but will take part in another meeting of some 25 ministers, including the seven, on Saturday.

The left has to get ready to make the Dems vote AGAINST all trade agreements! If Wall Street and the corporate evil want them passed they need to make the TEABAG FRAUDS vote for them!

Any Democrat that gives the GOP cover needs to be FIRED in a 2012 primary and they need to get that message LOUD AND CLEAR!

2. Sounds like mainly developing countries that are pushing Doha. Reducing our agricultural subsidies
will help their farmers compete with our subsidized crop prices and cheaper access to patented medicine controlled by pharmaceutical companies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doha_Development_Round#Issues

"A 2008 study by World Bank Lead Economist Kym Anderson<48> found that global income could increase by more than $3000 billion per year, $2500 billion of which would go to the developing world."

"The Copenhagen Consensus, which evaluates solutions for global problems regarding the cost-benefit ratio, in 2008 ranked the DDA as the second-best investment for global welfare, after the provision of vitamin supplements to the world's 140 million malnourished children."

Seems that developing countries would get most of the benefits from Doha, so the developed countries (particularly the US and EU with strong agricultural and pharmaceutical opposition) have been unwilling to agree to a new treaty.
