CAIRO -- Egyptian state TV says President Hosni Mubarak has ordered a night curfew from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. in Cairo, the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria and the flashpoint city of Suez east of the capital. It said the military will work in tandem with the police to enforce the ban.

It was the most drastic measure so far to quell riots and protests that spiraled into chaos on Friday.

5:23 pm - Al Jazeera's cameras captured footage of an armored personnel carrier driving on a street near central Tahrir Square with security forces wearing camoflauge inside. The crowd seemed to welcome them with happiness. Is this Egypt's army?

Ruling Party HQ Set Ablaze; Police Driven from Cairo Main Square; Protestors Take Control of Streets Throughout Country

(CBS/AP) Last Updated 1:10 p.m. ET

CAIRO - Egypt's military has been deployed throughout the country to help police struggling to put down massive protests against President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year reign.

This is the first time the military has become involved in demonstrations that began Tuesday and have continuously raged in Cairo, Suez and Alexandria.

The ruling party headquarters in Cairo was going up in flames apparently set by enraged protesters demanding Mubarak's ouster. Thousands stayed on the streets into the night in Cairo and Suez despite the government opposing an official curfew at dusk for the entire country.

In one of many astonishing scenes Friday, thousands of anti-government protesters wielding rocks, glass and sticks chased hundreds of riot police away from the main square in downtown Cairo and several of the policemen stripped off their uniforms and badges and joined the demonstrators.

4. Watching Aljazeera
And they were cheering the military in the streets. The tanks were waving flags and stuff and interacting with the protesters. I hope they aren't forced to put down the uprising with violence in the streets...
