Bristol Palin's Abstinence Talk at Washington University Panel Cancelled after Student Outcry
Source: CBS News

Bristol Palin's scheduled appearance on a Washington University panel has been canceled, according to the University, after outrage over the appearance prompted protests from students.

Palin, the daughter of 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, was scheduled to speak on a February panel about abstinence as part of the university's Sexual Responsibility Week. The 20-year-old single mother is an ambassador to the Candie's Foundation, which encourages abstinence among teenagers.

Many students at the university's St. Louis campus protested Palin's planned visit, prompting the issue to be taken up at a student Senate meeting this week.

Among the students' objections to the visit was the matter of Palin's pricetag: According to the St. Louis Today, the Student Union Treasury at Washington University approved a $20,000 budget for the event. The student government did not disclose Palin's exact fee for the appearance. She has been known to charge anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000 per occasion.

"It's not necessarily in opposition to the ideas that are being presented," said Philip Thomas, a Washington University student who started an online petition protesting Palin's appearance, in an interview with the St. Louis Today. "People are getting so angry because of the opposition to Palin's lack of expertise and the high cost she is charging." He said the outrage over the fee was driven in part by anger over recent budget cuts that have affected other student activities.

88. Yeah, amazing isn't it.
I mean, for starters who better to talk about abstinence than her. For half of that money, I can send my alcholic uncle over to speak to them on how to stay sober. I guess that the logic is "Who better to lecture on this topic, but a person who has never practiced a day of abstinence in her whole whorish life". It makes sense, if you don't think about it very much. I am glad that the school kicked that little slut to the curb. I wish that the representative was not so politically correct about it and didn't make it seem as though it was just the cost. If only I could be that spokesman for a day. :)

Good for them
Bristol Palin's only contribution to any conversation on abstinence would be "I had sex, got pregnant, and now I regret it."

Sure, she could parrot some right-wing talking points, but where's her empirical research or field data?

If regret is sufficient qualification for receiving a $15,000 to $30,000 speaking fee, then perhaps they should invite a teen mother from their community to speak, pay her that fee, and actually do something positive to improve their surrounding community.

Living beings have sex. Period. That's the way nature works.

Religions long ago have found that using abstinence to try to control people is incredibly effective. The wingnuts picked up on the idea. No wonder our society is so fucked up about the topic.

21. B Palin giving an abstinence talk is like C Manson giving an improving customer service skills talk
Was she going to mention the need to use Lysol after using a condom?

Despite consistent federal and state funding, Choosing the Best has long been controversial. An early edition of the abstinence-only curriculum advised its readers to use Lysol on their genital after using a condom.7 Some parents groups have organized opposition to Choosing the Best. In 2004, parents in DeKalb County, Georgia successfully lobbied the school board to remove the Choosing the Best from the district’s curriculum, citing its scientific errors, gender stereotypes and scare tactics. These parents have now formed Georgia Parents for Responsible Health Education, which aims to support other parents in ensuring that their children receive accurate comprehensive sexual health
education.8

Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 08:59 PM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
A nurse I know frequently sees young women with chemical burns who "spilled a household cleaner on their lap" (not lysol and almost anything) - they tend to just go along with that story since any young woman actually doing that is probably already terrified enough of their parents learning they are sexually active and don't need an honor killing on their conscience.

30. It would have been worth the money if she had had to
answer questions in a open forum.

She would have been chopped into intellectual microscopic pieces.
Starting with not being able to understand what most of the big (more than two syllable) words were.

It would have been a great learning experience of Bristol to have to face questions from students who are putting themselves through college, some with children who are single parents, some with whole families to support.

What could a easy over, rich kid who lives off mamma's apron strings have to say to the average college student?

Seriously, what would her teaching point be?

41. Hooray for the students at WU. Smart enough to know they do not want some uneducated idiot
talking about something she barely knows anything about and charging an outrageous fee to do so.

Getting knocked up makes her absolutely no more qualified to talk about Abstience as it does making Charlie Sheen a viable speaker about alcholism. And I would suspect the might be able to find a few speakers from within the student body that would be willing to talk about their experience - student who wouldn't charge $20k and would bring this topic much closer to home.

54. I'm beginning to understand the Palin philosophy: "I am NOT a role model."
Bristol gets knocked up, and then peddles herself as a spokesperson for abstinence: "Hey, who better to lecture kids about the consequences of unprotected sex?"

And, mommy is on the lecture/tv circuit talking about responsible leadership. "Ya, I quit bein' governor of Alaska to pursue fame and fortune. I'm a quitter and I was a horrible leader. Who knows better about what it takes to avoid choosin' awful leaders?"

Had she remained abstinent, think of all the experiences she'd have missed: going to the GOP convention as poster girl for family values, photo on the cover of People magazine, being a contestant on Dancing with the Stars and now owning her own home while other kids are just struggling to make enough to move out of their parents' house.

Have we ran out of true hero's? People we can truly admire for staying the course, working hard and doing something in life worth while? It seems the trend now is to elevate pregnant teens and homeless alcoholics to star status while good kids and people who are responsible are left behind. I for one would like to see a good kid who has stayed abstinent and gone on to college and made something out of her life, get $30 thousand dollars than Brisol Palin. 112. Conservatives have been complaining about colleges having liberal biases
and accuse colleges of censoring right-wing views. Reading the article though, it's actually the students who chose to drop Palin. She's the only non-university voice in this panel apparently: "Palin's replacement on the panel will be Dr. Katie Plax, head adolescent medicine and associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine. According to Student Life, a campus newspaper at the school, Flax will be joined on the panel by representatives from the University's Catholic Student Center, Planned Parenthood and Student Health Services." Hmm, I wonder if Flax will be presenting a pro-abstinence viewpoint? I'm sure that there are people other than Bristol Palin or hardcore religious types who can articulate a case for abstaining from sex until marriage.

She does know the consequences of not being abstinent. I'm not saying she should be making speeches - she shouldn't & certainly not for money, and I'm not saying she's become wiser because she got pregnant and is now a single mother. I just don't think hypocrisy is the issue here. She knows a little something about the subject precisely because she effed up. Unfortunately she's also a foul-mouthed, foolish idiot whose circumstance would be unremarkable if Sarah Palin weren't her mother. She isn't a hypocrite, she's a nothing.

Dancing with the Stars passes, but motherhood lasts forever and if you have kids, you know exactly how life-altering it is whether or not you are behaving as a parent ought. I think you're expressing disgust for the way she's exploited her situation and I share that disgust for her personally but I still believe the word "hypocrisy" doesn't apply. "Idiot" is more apt, IMHO.

135. So, up to $30K for an abstinence speech from a knocked-up 20 year-old?
Guess the Palins are smarter than we think.

And you know it's all bullshit because I get the feeling that Bristol is probably screwing everything in sight.

138. You wanna understand White Privilege? Here's your example right here
Edited on Sat Jan-29-11 03:45 AM by johnlucas
A Black teenager gets pregnant & becomes a teen mother...
...she's a welfare queen destroying the fabric of society.

A White teenager gets pregnant & becomes a teen mother...
...MTV makes reality shows of her & she gets cover shots on glossy magazines.

A Black teenager gets pregnant & becomes a teen mother...
...she's raising another generation of gang-banging, drug-dealing delinquents that will send the country into ruin.

A White teenager gets pregnant & becomes a teen mother...
...she gets thousand-dollar speaking engagements in colleges & universities ironically talking up the benefits of abstinence.

You see what I did there?
"Ah, yes. I see what you did there."

All that's missing is the delivery of Paul Mooney to drive the point home.

Thank you for your time, ladies & laddies.
John Lucas

140. USUALLY, college students have long since made their decisions to be sexually active or not. The
discussion needs to be about birth control, etc. Bristol's message is likely targeted at an almost non-existent audience, or the fact that they are attending the lecture, strongly indicates they have already made the decision for abstinence.

About paying her - I agree that is too much money coming from an inappropriate source.

150. I can understand the student's frustration. Back at my University, we spent our student body money
bringing in Desmond Tutu in for a talk. Imagine the difference.

158. I can think of a million things that would be a better use for $17K.

155. I simply can't imagine justifying that price tag.
She's only got her life story -- no degrees, no particular area of expertise. It just looks like a celebrity appearance, nothing more.

160. My son goes there and he said
they want an open discussion on the subject. They realized everything she would say would be seen in terms of who her mother is.
He said they don't want it to be political, and anything from one of Palin's offspring would be.
