Living in sometimes chaotic Ukraine the last five years, I often find the warnings the embassy here issues often fall into the "be afraid" category. Yes, overseas Americans can get the same steady diet of "fear, fear" that Americans are fed daily, should you choose to pay attention to embassy warnings.
But having said that, the Egyptian situation is well beyond anything that's gone on in Ukraine lately. And someone I used to work with many years ago now lives and works in Cairo. He's there with his family too. While he is originally from Africa, South Africa that is, he likely would stand out as a foreigner, although his Facebook page lists Arabic as one of his languages. But one can be a part of history being made, or one can run from it.
I missed the Orange Revolution in Ukraine by about eight months. But my wife and her father did participate in various ways. I would have liked to be here to experience that.
