CDC: No link between deaths and Chinese drywall
Source: Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it has not found a link between tainted Chinese drywall and the deaths of 11 people living in homes with the defective drywall in Louisiana, Florida and Virginia.

The CDC said in a report Monday that the people died "without exception" due to "preexisting chronic health conditions unrelated to imported drywall exposure."

The CDC's findings back up previous findings by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Large quantities of defective Chinese-made drywall were imported during the housing boom and after a string of Gulf Coast hurricanes five years ago. The drywall has been linked to corrosion in thousands of homes, mostly in Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.

15. You can't get Chinese drywall here anymore
In the archives there is a calculation, which I did, that proves the economic unsoundness of Chinese drywall. It is very simple: you can get 680 sheets of 1/2" 4x8 drywall in a board stock container. It costs $5000 to put this container on a ship and transport it to the United States, or $7.36 per sheet. A sheet of 1/2" 4x8 drywall, at the local Home Depot, sells for $6.95.

The only reason that drywall was brought into the country is that a combination of the Bush Building Boom and the various home-eating natural disasters had created a demand for drywall which North America's drywall plants were unable to meet. (I was selling drywall at the time, mine came out of Charlotte, and I went many weeks with no drywall on the floor.)

What we must do is support a robust drywall manufacturing capacity in the US and Canada that will prevent builders from turning to China for board ever again.

8. Was there a time when CDC, EPA, ETC could be trusted,
or was I just naive way back then?
Seems like every big agency that is supposed to be watching out for us has been revealed to be
working for the big bucks, the "small people" be damned, and now we do not know who to trust.

9. Yet we want an untrustworthy government to take control over more and more of our lives.
It's the opposite of liberal, if you think about it.
