Kohl Loans Warchest $1 Million
Source: National Journal

Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl (D) loaned his campaign $1 million in the last quarter of 2010, seemingly putting to rest speculation that he may retire instead of seeking re-election next year.

According to his fourth quarter FEC report, obtained by The Hotline, Kohl contributed $1 million to his war chest while only spending $12,000. Because of the loan, he finished the year with slightly more than $1 million cash on hand.

Kohl, who will be 77 years old on Election Day next year, had been the subject of retirement rumors because of his age and near empty war chest. He finished the third quarter of 2010 with less than $26,000 in his campaign account.

But Kohl, who has significant personal wealth through his ownership of a grocery store chain and the Milwaukee Bucks, appears to be laying the groundwork to run for a fifth term.

1. We recently received an e-mail from him
An update of what's happening in Washington, sent to Democratic lists. Can't remember ever getting one like that from him. Immediately I said to myself, he's running again. That's not a bad idea. He has been more and more a reliable vote for the Democrats, and might be the only one who can beat Paul Ryan.

2. Primary!
Let's get a real progressive to represent us. I know Russ is teaching, so he's out. How about that Mayor of Racine? Mark Pocan? Or somebody from the Labor crowd?

3. Why on earth would anyone rational Democrat believe that Kohl deserves to be primaried?
I'm assuming you've paid attention to the kind of yoyo who beat Feingold?

We need an incumbent who can win the entire state of Wisconsin and not simply run well in Madison which does not reflect the rest of the state.

4. Feingold ran the saddest campaign in history.
I don't expect mediocre-Kohl to put up much of a fight either.
