Iran summons US hiker Sarah Shourd for spying trial
Source: BBC

An American woman who spent 14 months in an Iranian jail has been summoned to Tehran to stand trial for spying, an Iranian government official has said.

Sarah Shourd and two American men were arrested as they hiked near the Iraq border in July 2009.

They maintain they were tourists but Tehran has charged them with spying.

Ms Shourd was released on bail in September and returned to the US. Her fiance Shane Bauer and their friend Josh Fattal remain in prison in Tehran.

Seems like a no-win situation for Ms. Shourd. Should she go? They could re "detain" her. Should she stay? They could keep her companions indefinitely then...

What assurances could the Iranians give us that this will go down like it is SUPPOSED to?

4. As her attorney I would categorically advise her not to even
consider appearing in Iran.

6. Then her friend and fiance are dead
That's a tough choice to make.

Risk a jail term or know definitely that you caused your fiance's death.

7. Reminds me of a Vince Vaughn movie - the title contains "paradise" in it
Basically some post-college backpackers in Malaysia bought far more pot than they needed because it was so cheap. They smoked a ton of it and threw the rest away. Someone saw one of them throw it away. The other two went home. The one who threw it away was eventually arrested and sentenced to death for the amount he was in possession. The others were asked to come back by an attorney representing the man to be executed because if they said they shared possession, the death penalty would be reduced to 10 years - but the ones who came back would also be given 10 years. Tough decision! Good movie too.

8. "Return to Paradise"
the line before the friend is executed is, "You're still you! I see you!" I used that as my parting words to my kids on the first day of school as they walked up the sidewalk toward school.
