TX: Judge Clears Way for Suit Again GOP Group (Tom DeLay again)
AUSTIN, Texas--Four Democratic candidates for the Texas House who lost their races after being targeted by several GOP groups may proceed with a lawsuit against them, a State District Judge ruled Wednesday.

State District Judge Darlene Byrne also said the Democrats may collect substantial damages if they prevail in their action against Texans for a Republican Majority, a political action committee founded with help from U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Sugar Land)

The former candidates are suing the group, which admits spending around $600,000 in corporate contributions on polls, fund-raising, receptions and voter contact and consultants to gain victories in 22 Texas House Races in the 2002 elections.

AT&T records sought in spending probe
Associated Press
AUSTIN -- An investigation into spending to support Republican candidates in the 2002 Texas elections is seeking records from AT&T.

A subpoena was issued for the corporation's Austin-based vice president of government relations, Michael Jewell, the Austin-American Statesman reported Wednesday.
(snip)

The investigation by the Travis County district attorney's Public Integrity Unit first focused on the Texas Association of Business' use of corporate money to buy ads during the 2002 election.

The investigation has since broadened and includes a probe into whether $152,000 in payments to Texas House candidates in 2002 violated the law. The payments were from a political action committee created by U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land.

Texas Association of Business President Bill Hammond has refused to disclose the group's corporate donors. AT&T is the first corporation to be identified as readying its records for investigators.
