Peta uses murder case in anti-meat ads
Vancouver, British Columbia - A US animal rights group defended an advertising campaign on Wednesday that links the women victims in a Canadian serial murder case to the fate of butchered pigs.

Relatives of the Vancouver women, feared killed by accused murderer Robert Pickton, have denounced the campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which wants to convince people not to eat meat.

Health officials warned last month that processed pork products that Pickton gave or sold to friends from his ramshackle Port Coquitlam farm outside Vancouver may have been contaminated by human remains. Pickton was arrested in 2002 and is awaiting trial on multiple murder charges.

1. I like Peta's audacity
While I scarcely agree with them on anything (ok, fur), they have such a nice line in shaking up the somnambulent public.

14. PETA has never been limited
by such inhibiting factors as "taste."

However, they are damn good at publicity.

From another article:

PETA anti-meat campaign 'grotesque, exploitative'

Animal rights group makes play on serial killings

Colin Perkel
The Canadian Press
April 7, 2004

A new anti-meat campaign that exploits the horrific killing of women in British Columbia is a disgusting travesty that demeans the victims and exploits women, critics say.

The outdoor ad, sponsored by the militant animal-rights group PETA, shows a stock head shot of a pretty young woman on one side and a "smiling" pig on the other, along with the slogan Neither Of Us Is Meat.

That's a reference to the case of Robert Pickton, the Port Coquitlam, B.C., pig farmer who is charged in the deaths of 15 women. Pickton is expected to go to trial late this year or early in 2005.

British Columbia's medical officer of health recently said meat products from Pickton's farm that were given to friends and associates may have contained human remains.

Sick them people, jus feckin' SICK!

6. PETA is GREAT !!!
If they offend idiots who obviously refuse to question the status quo and those who choose to lean on commonly accepted beliefs THEN GRRRREAT!!

More power to them !!

Let'm shake up the stagnant stuffy people who won't move past the sheeple mentality !!--
We all do need to realize that looking at things from alternate perspectives won't hurt you !!!
I promise !!
I tried it and I am still ok...

If you wouldn't want to change your inherited habits then fine but anyone who gets offended by free speech needs their head checked.

Maybe PRIONS have already started eating holes in their brains' logic centers !!FREE SPEECH !!
FREEDOM to challenge accepted beliefs !!
and even freedpom for those who want to sell the common sheeple ideology.

12. FREEDOM to eat a nice juicy blood-rare steak!
FYI, I eat halal beef, which is 100% organic and totally free of any risk of mad cow disease. I'm not a sheep, I'm a human...but part of being human is eating meat. It's something we've evolved to do. You don't want to, hurrah for you.

(And I won't ask what's eating holes in YOUR brain.)

Not really. Some of us evolved beyond that point.

"Knee-jerk reactions"

Does this mean you think that what they did here is OK?

Tell me I misunderstood.

Just to let you know,

The PROVINCE of British Columbia has banned this advertisement because they find it so offensive.

And as a rule,

Us Canuks are pretty tolerant of differences of opinion.

13. Just here at DU,
every Peta thread is packed with how terrible they are and how they are hurting our cause and all sorts of hysteria.

It's free speech as far as I'm concerned and I don't find their stuff all that offensive. This one is pretty stout though, and if BC doesn't want to allow it, that's fine too. The message got out regardless.

PETA are insane. I don't care what their perceived politics are, they are raving bloody lunatics. You don't like meat? DON'T FUCKING EAT IT, and leave the rest of us alone. Their crazed evangelism is a quality they share with the worst elements of the religious right, and it is no more attractive in them.

23. get over it already--you eat what you want-don't freak when others do ok!
Meat is the decomposing body of a dead animal--
you want to put that in your mouth go ahead--
put anything you want in your mouth.
NOBODY cares!!!
But realize that knowlege is not dangerous--
If PETA wants to point out the corporate exploitation and inhumane treatment of other mammals then that should be no cause to get alarmed--
You'll be ok--
No one is going to come to your house--
It's not the Jehova's Witnesses-
It's just information!!

24. Information can be scary
The billboard itself seems pretty low key. It could be referring to men objectifying women as easily as a serial killer eating them. I didn't follow the original story. Did he actually eat the women or just feed them to his pigs? I think PETA's point is that anyone who ate the pigs didn't notice they might have been eating human flesh since flesh is flesh - and suffering is suffering, whether it is a pig or a woman.

27. Nobody Cares?
Then why is PETA getting their panties all bunched up about it?

Corporate exploitation and inhumane practices are wrong, no doubt about it. They are not the result of people eating meat. They are the result of the culture of greed. To link meat-eating to inhumanity is specious reasoning at it's finest.

10. peta is black ops
Gotta be. The hallmark of the progressive cause is empathy and caring for others. Nothing Peta does has ever convinced they are about anything except causing hurt and division, be it exploiting young murder victims and hurting their families (as in this case) or in the horrible campaign years ago exploiting the death of Kurt Cobain. Decent people simply aren't this cruel and don't spend their time looking for ways to crush the feelings of the grieving.

15. The hallmark of the Progresive cause is empathy and caring for others?
The world's turned upside down if I'm defending PETA (I just ate a steak sandwich for lunch if you have to know), but there's nothing progressive about turning a blind-eye to evil and injustice. If you believe, as I do not, that the killing of animals is inherently evil, then you are morally obligated to do whats necessary to end the practice. Even if that creates division. Its the John Brown approach to perceived moral injustice.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk is most certainly not a conservative. She's a brilliant, if just slightly unprincipled, proponent of her cause. I don't agree with much of anything she says, but she is effective.

18. Some here seem to be missing the point here, I'll spell it out
.
.
.

Most are probably not aware of why there is so much outrage.

The paper doesn't spell it out graphically, but I will.

There was a guy in BC that has killed over a dozen girls and disposed of their remains on his farm.

He also raised pigs, and he used to give the meat to his neighbours.

DNA testing has indicated that HUMAN REMAINS was in the food for the pigs.

So in essence, it is quite possible that someone actually ate part of one of the murdered girls.

So this poster

OBVIOUSLY is going to upset the parents and friends of the murdered girls, nevermind what must be going through some of the minds of the recipients of the tainted meat.

I know absolutely nothing about PETA, their actions or their affiliations,

But if God himself had created this poster,

I would STILL think that it is disgusting and wrong.

20. No you don't understand, there are people here who will use images
of...say the plane hitting the WTO for their own personal agenda and to hell with what the victim's family, friends or just caring people think, so long as it serves the purpose of furthering their agenda and giving them a slight inner chuckle at the same time.

You see it here all the time...say a burning body, arms stretched to the heavens with a caption invoking barbecue. Just so long as it can be used politically. Those are the kinds of people that frequent this board. Get with the program and get over yourself.

26. I only click on PETA stories to laugh at the PETA bashers.
And they never can help themselves. Methinks they doth protest too much, perhaps feeling a little guilty.

But PETA manages to penetrate the profound denial that has encompassed the masses. The angry react now, but the message persists. Days later, weeks later, at the grocery or market, as he peruses the bloody bags of meat, Joe Public asks himself, "is it really true what they say?"

And a seed is sown.
