Breaking on CNNI - Iraqi Interior Minister Resigns
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 06:55 AM by maddezmom

Iraq’s interior minister, in charge of security forces, resigned today at the request of top US administrator Paul Bremer to maintain the Shiite-Sunni balance in the government.

Nuri al-Badran, a Shiite Muslim, noted that the defence minister is also a Shiite and said he wanted to maintain a balance of Iraq’s religious groups on the Cabinet.

He quoted Bremer as telling him, “That will cause an imbalance, and we in the coalition cannot accept that. The solution is for you to step down from your position.”

“I consider myself to have resigned,” al-Badran said

Its too bad the SHEEP in the country are not more intelligent. The Machinations of Bremer are so worthy that he could create and write a whole new Sitcom based on Dallas, the Shield and the Sopranos

11. no, thank whoever appointed the guy in the first place! ha ha.
Would we not have hand picked the Defense and Interior ministers?

If your object in dismissing him is to "maintain" a balance, and you've been the one dictating the balance ... er, uh - this is a very strange world I live in.

10. More from he same article

Sounds like Bremmer feared he was a Shi'a first, IGC member second...

14. Now that idiot Bremmer
is worried about the Shiite-Sunni balance in the Iraqi government? Isn't it a little late to worry about that after you've blatantly tried to screw the Sunnis?

Oh yeah, let's appoint some Sunnis quick. Yeah that's the ticket, that will fix this fine mess Bremmer's gotten us into. As usual, a day late and a dollar short.

18. Democracy..................
break down the word. What the U.S. wants is NOT a Democracy, Bush wants a hand picked group of ass lickers that agree with HIS vision of Democracy in Iraq.
Somehow I think this is not going to sit well with the people of Iraq. It's more proof that it's an occupation and hand picked government, not even close to a Democracy.

20. Oh yes, these guys are ready for taking over ...
... their country with a delicate imbalance of Shiites and Sunnis. Somehow I get a sinking feeling that all hell is going to break out. Oh well, as Gandhi told the British,

"There is no people on Earth who would not prefer their own bad government to the good government of an alien power."

21. Update: New Info (Financial Times)
http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1079420236995&p=1012571727085

Interesting new comments; this report was filed early August 8th:

However, coalition officials cast doubt on this version of events. Another Shia member of the governing adminstration, Haider Abbadi, linked the move to growing disquiet over the handling of the twin insurgency of both Sunni and Shia groups now confronting US-led forces.

"There will be many resignations," said Mr Abbadi, interim minister of communications (!!!)
and a member of the al-Dawa party. “It’s as if the US army is out of control,” he said. “Their massive use of force is bringing the country to the precipice. Iraqis can no longer afford to been seen siding with the Americans.”

Iraq's governing council is due to meet in emergency session on Friday.

23. gee-w's *hero* had this to say ...
I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma: but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965), Radio speech, 1939

Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.
Sir Winston Churchill

Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.

24. Bremer needed to fire someone over the uprising.
Neo-cons can never take responsibility for their mistakes, so he couldn't fire himself. This guy was convenient.

25. I expect more to "resign"
with the June 30th deadline approaching and the fighting intensifying... don't be surprised if more 'lapdogs' resign.

This Mess-O-Potamia is highlighting that there was NO comprehensive PLAN for Iraq beyond:

Step 1: 'Git' Saddam
Step 2: 'Git' re-Selected

meanwhile, bush* inc. still hasn't figured out who is going to be in 'control' after June 30. Does iraq have animal shelters? maybe bush* can find a suitable lap dog there?

26. Minister for Human Rights resigns too
according to the website of Juan Cole the Minister of Human Rights resigned too.

"The Minister for Human Rights in Iraq, appointed by the American-appointed Interim Governing Council, has resigned. Abdul Basit Turki said he was leaving his position "in protest at the practices of the Americans." The Interior Minister, Nuri Badran, who is responsible for internal security, was forced to resign by Paul Bremer. IGC member Samir al-Sumaid`i admitted that the concil had no power to alter the American plan for attacking Fallujah.
