Union takes action against school board
Source: WPRI Eye Witness News

The Providence teachers union has filed an unfair labor practices complaint against the Providence school board.

The complaint follows Mayor Angel Taveras' decision to fire all 1,900 plus teachers because the school department faces a $40 million deficit.

Teachers are planning a rally Wednesday at Providence City Hall.

about this and if I recall properly the board is obligated by union contract to provide notification of something like a years' advanced notice prior to layoffs. Since the school board believe there will be layoffs but do not know exactly where, they sent a notice to everyone.

Dos anyone have different information?

Correction'

The School Board voted to send dismissal notices to eight teachers and once again, the board split 4-3, with Robert Wise, Brian Lalli and Philip Gould voting against the motion.

After the public comments, School Board President Kathleen Crain stressed that that board’s hands were tied by a state law that says teachers must be notified of their employment status by March 1.

She said she also wanted to dispel rumors that the mayor and the board sent out the termination letters because they want to replace higher-paid teachers with less-senior teachers.

terminations.

Tavares says not many teachers will lose their job. then the question begs..... what they hell are they doing firing teachers?

Possibly, so they can re-hire them for less, get rid of the ones that have seniority?

it's union busting and Tavares ought to be ashamed of himself.

5. yeah, I just read the same here
Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith attended tonight's school board meeting with harsh words about the proposed terminations.

All 2000 public-school teachers in Providence received termination notices last week as Mayor Taveras's administration tries to make up a $40 million deficit in the school budget. In a statement, Taveras says that most of the teachers will have those termination notices rescinded, but that's not making Smith and the teachers any happier.

Terminations would mean that even if a majority of those teachers are re-hired, the city can ignore seniority in the re-hiring process. Under layoff rules, the city must re-hire teachers based on their seniority, and so the teachers who make the most are generally the first re-hired.

6. shouldn't there be a cause for termination?
This is why this country needs more unions.

7. I hope they have a big crowd
I was disappointed that the rally the Providence rally on Saturday did not have many teachers there. We need to get motivated.

9. truth is
The Teachers Unions should pay more into their pensions, but it's stupid to put all the blame for a state's or city's budget crisis on them. It's on wall street and the regulatory bodies that turned a blind eye.
