Progressives Target GOP State Senators In WI With Recall Threat

Evan McMorris-Santoro | March 1, 2011, 8:30AM

A pair of national progressive groups are firing the first shots in what could become a full-scale recall campaign against Republican state Senators in Wisconsin, TPM has learned.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy For America are launching a robocall campaign to test the waters for the immediate recall of several state Senators as well as Senate President Michael Ellis and moderate Senator Dale Schultz, who voters would be able to recall in a year under Wisconsin law.

PCCC and DFA say they can mobilize 40,000 local activists to kickstart a recall effort should voters be ready for one.

"We will not be bullied by Gov. Walker's unfair attempt to attack workers and take away our rights," Ron Biendseil, one of DFA's Wisconsin members, said in a statement. "And if the Republicans go along with Walker, they will be looking for new jobs sooner than they think."

4. Don't Threaten. Just Do It!
If they believe they can get the signatures needed, they should just begin the process. Threats to do so won't work. A successful signature gathering campaign will send a very clear, unmistakable message.

Begin recall campaigns for every Republican Senator that it's possible to recall at this time.

8. It will also force the Republican Party to tie up resources
Resource that they wish they could use elsewhere.

Who knows, this might drain the Koch fortune by a tiny amount. They might have to look behind the sofa for some spare change from daddy's billions.

7. They need to go ahead and get the signatures NOW to recall Gov. Walker.
Even though it's too early to do the recall, they need to let him know that he IS going to be recalled.

10. I don't think that's possible. In California, at least, you must
officially file for a recall petition before collecting signatures, which must be collected on the official paperwork. If you can't file until the official has been in office for a year, then you can't begin collecting signatures. That's the way it works in most jurisdictions. I assume that's the case in Wisconsin, too.

On the other hand, several GOP state Senators are recall eligible, so the filing can be made and signatures collected.

19. They are actually having people sign a pledge online to join a recall
effort a year from now. That way they will have the database of names and contact info, since they will have only a 60-day window to collect enough signatures when the required one-year period is up. (He can't be recalled until after he has been in office for a full year--Wisconsin law).

Here is the link to the site that is collecting those pledges:

12. Rise Humanity!
This is an opportunity to go beyond mere partisan politics. We have an opportunity to create a post-industrial society beginning in Wisconsin. Let us not be satisfied with merely getting rid of the Repubasturds. Let us promote candidates who are willing to make society work for people, to end the definition of health in economic terms. Rise up for humanity!

13. Good comment, and welcome to Democratic Underground
I've noticed some excellent comments by new members of our community. It's great to have new DU'ers here. A great antidote to the low-post-trolls who turn up from time to time.

15. Once they're sent packing...
...there will be elections to fill the vacancies. Wisconsin will need excellent progressive candidates who can run adequately funded competitive races, in order to help return the state to normalcy (or would sanity be the better term?). Merely getting rid of Walker-enabling incumbents will not be worth the effort if their newly elected replacements turn out to be clones of the ones given the boot. Hopefully the national significance of any Wisconsin recall & replacement effort will help generate the resources necessary to pull it off.
