The HillHouse Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has fired Kurt Bardella, one of his top spokesmen, for allegedly sharing some of his e-mail correspondences with reporters with another reporter for The New York Times.
Issa released a statement Tuesday saying that an initial probe into a Politico report found that Bardella shared private e-mails between him and reporters with Mark Leibovich, a Times journalist who is reportedly working on a book about Washington's political culture.
"Though limited, these actions were highly inappropriate, a basic breach of trust with the reporters it was his job to assist, and inconsistent with established communications office policies. As a consequence, his employment has been terminated," Issa said.
The incident is a blow to Issa, the chairman of the committee tasked with overseeing and investigating the federal government. Bardella was known to be an aggressive spokesman who was close to the congressman. A previous story in the Times described Bardella as Issa's "mini-me."
