Steve Jobs emerges to introduce iPad 2

SAN FRANCISCO – Apple CEO Steve Jobs briefly emerged from his medical leave and walked on stage to standing ovation Wednesday to unveil the second-generation of the popular iPad, which will go on sale March 11 in the U.S. Jobs looked frail and wore his signature black mock turtleneck, blue jeans and wire-rimmed glasses.

"We've been working on this product for a while, and I just didn't want to miss today," Jobs said at the San Francisco event. "Thank you for having me."

The next-generation tablet computer has a faster processor than the original iPad's. As expected, it comes with two cameras for taking photos and video chatting. The battery life will be the same as the original — about 10 hours of "on" time and a month on standby. The iPad 2 is also thinner — 8.8 millimeters instead of the current 13.4 millimeters. "The new iPad 2 is actually thinner than your iPhone 4," Jobs said.

In 2009, Jobs said in advance that he would take a six-month medical leave; this time, the company did not specify when he would return. The last time Steve Jobs went on medical leave, marketing chief Phil Schiller was the main presenter at product launch events.

An LBN story a couple of weeks ago from the National Enquirer had him at death's door.

He's alive... live on stage right now.

1. You can still be at death's door and be on stage ...
it's called multi-tasking.

6. Yes, but will it support flash?
Didn't think so....

For me that's been a huge disappointment. I would have sold mine months ago save for the fact that it does have several convienant uses. Still it is pretty week though and I feel guilty for buying it.

So ah, I suppose I won't be able to sell it regardless since it's replacement came out... Any Apple people here know what kind of depreciation Apple products have when the next generations come out?? You know, in case in need to sell this in the next few months...

8. Check the Apple Store
They have a "Recycle" program where you send your old stuff back (free shipping) and get credit for a new one. I've never actually done this. I keep my Macs until they beg to be put out of misery and are completely worthless. My sister has, though, and said it's a lot less stressful than selling privately.

$2,500 new, 5.5 years ago. Worthless now. Breaks my heart.

11. It isn't worthless to people who need to run Mac OS 9 apps in Classic
We bought a couple at work off of Craigslist so we could access some client data in a proprietary mac based system. I understand they are also sought after by old school Adobe Pagemaker users.

13. Needed $300 in repairs just to boot up
Your point is well-taken -- I didn't want to spend the money. Usually I do try to donate my used computers to charity.

12. Thinner than the IPHONE 4?
Probably to increase repair sales for screens that crack when they slip onto the floor.
